  • Publication number: 20110031025
Abstract: A drill bit is provided that in one embodiment may include a force application device on a drill bit body, wherein the force application device includes a force application member pivotally coupled to the drill bit and configured to extend from the drill bit body to apply force on a wellbore wall when the drill bit is used to drill a wellbore, and an actuator configured to actuate the force application member to apply force on a wellbore wall during drilling of the wellbore.

  • Publication number: 20100329081
Abstract: A method of non-destructively identifying and characterizing defects in a rotary drill component is provided. The method includes providing a drill component and an ultrasonic test system including a phased array ultrasonic transducer (PAUT). The method also includes acoustically coupling the PAUT to a surface location, transmitting focused ultrasonic acoustic waves at the location into the PAUT and recording a reflected acoustic response corresponding to a portion of a predetermined volume of a microstructure of the component associated with the location on the surface. The method also includes storing the response and moving one of the transducer or the component to a plurality of unique locations representative of the predetermined microstructure and repeating these steps. The method also includes processing the responses and providing an output signal to an output device configured to provide an output indicative of differences in the output signal within the predetermined volume of the microstructure.

  • Patent number: 7823664
Abstract: An earth boring bit has a steel body having at least one leg with a depending bearing pin. A cone having cutting elements is rotatably mounted to the bearing pin. A ball plug weld is on the outer surface of the leg. A layer of hardfacing applied to part of the outer surface of the leg, the hardfacing having carbide particles in a matrix. A corrosion resistant coating containing at least 50% nickel is formed on parts of the outer surface of the leg that are free of the layer of hardfacing both above and below the ball plug weld.

  • Patent number: 7484577
Abstract: An earth-boring bit has bit legs having hardfacing covering the majority of the outer surface. The hardfacing may have gaps at an area surrounding the ball plug and an area around a fixture dimple. The hardfacing may be multi-layer, with the layers differing in composition. Recesses may be located at the leading and trailing edges of the supporting metal so as to provide a thicker area of hardfacing at these corners. The supporting metal of the outer surface of the bit leg may also have an upper cylindrical section and a lower tapered section. The hardfacing has a constant outer diameter but will taper in thickness in the lower tapered section. The thickness of the hardfacing may also vary in a circumferential direction with a greater thickness over at least one of the corners.

  • Publication number: 20090008154
Abstract: An earth boring bit formed from an alloy comprising a low carbon content and high molybdenum content is disclosed herein. The molybdenum content is greater than about 0.8% to about 1.15% by weight of the alloy. The carbon content may range up to about 0.16% by weight of the alloy. The alloy may further comprise alloy further comprises manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, nickel, chromium, copper, aluminum, vanadium, and calcium; with the balance being iron. The alloy experiences a relatively flattened hardenability curve and low martinsite formation.

  • Patent number: 5587434
Abstract: A process for reacting molten polyolefin with a free radical generator wherein the molten polyolefin passes through an extruder and free radical generator is mixed with the molten polyolefin in increments along the extruder such that any previously added free radical generator is decomposed before the next increment of free radical generator is added to the molten polyolefin. Products of the process demonstrate improved efficiency of free radical generator utilization as measured by enhanced melt flow rates relative to the total amount of free radical generator used.

  • Patent number: 4621513
Abstract: A process for making a rigid packaging container which contains a "rolled lip" which comprises deforming a sheet of metal, plastic or paper composite material over a mold into a desired formed shape which contains a "lip", advancing a trimming means from the convex or bottom side of the shape while said shape is supported so that said shape does not deform; and trimming the shape from the convex or bottom side of the shape at a point on the lip of the shape which undercuts the periphery of the shape while, at the same time, forcing open the undercut of the lip of the shape.
