Patent number: 9473442Abstract: An improvement to an electronic mail program is disclosed. In particular, the improved electronic mail program enables a user to mark individual action items within a message and set attributes for each action item. In the preferred embodiment, attributes include priority, deadline, abstract, and responsibility. The electronic mail program stores the action items and associated attributes in a database and sends the message to one or more recipients. The electronic mail program then displays the message and action items to the recipients. Message recipients then navigate through the list of action items to read descriptions and to determine the priority and nature of the actions necessary. The responsibility attribute further indicates which recipient should respond to the action item. The improved electronic mail program updates the status of each action item in the database as recipients respond.Type: GrantFiled: September 16, 2013Date of Patent: October 18, 2016Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Danny Y. Patent number: 9330144Abstract: Returning a tagged facet tree to an end user who is only authorized to access an authorized portion of the facet tree is provided. A facet tree is received from a facet tree database. A first rule for the facet tree and a second rule for a plurality of tagging scenarios based on a characteristic of the end user is acquired. The first rule is applied to the facet tree before presentation to the end user on a user interface such that only the authorized portion of the facet tree is displayed to the end user. The second rule is applied to the plurality of tagging scenarios such that only a tagging scenario that is applicable to the characteristic of the end user is displayed to the end user. The tagging scenario is made available to the end user at a user interface.Type: GrantFiled: June 10, 2015Date of Patent: May 3, 2016Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Joel C. Acevedo-Aviles, Mario G. Ceste, Jr., John H. Handy-Bosma, J. Christopher Hawley, Raymond Lee, Matthew N. Roy

Patent number: 8813255Abstract: An embodiment of the invention provides a method for security classification applying social norming. More specifically, content is received from a user via an interface; and, a data repository connected to the interface stores the content. A portal connected to the data repository identifies an attempt to access the content from a non-user. A program processor connected to the portal determines whether the content includes a security classification. When the content does not include a security classification, a communications module connected to the program processor sends an alert to the user. The alert includes a request to assign a security classification to the content. When the content includes a security classification, the communications module sends a message to the user, wherein the message includes a request to verify the security classification.Type: GrantFiled: January 28, 2011Date of Patent: August 19, 2014Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Tamer E. Abuelsaad, John H. Handy-Bosma, Yael Ravin, William D. Morrison

Patent number: 7953747Abstract: A centralized method for defining and enforcing strong-typing among domains in RDBMS or ORDBMS is provided to allow flexible, easy, and quick domain creation, as well as facilitating easy implementation and change control on domains. When an application requests data from the database, one or more domains are first identified in the SQL query. A determination is then made as to whether operators for each domain pair in the SQL query are authorized. A determination is also made as to whether functions in the SQL authorized. If the operators and functions in the SQL are authorized, the initial SQL request is rewritten to include a casting formula for each domain pair operation. The rewritten SQL request is then executed.Type: GrantFiled: August 15, 2008Date of Patent: May 31, 2011Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: John H. Handy-Bosma, Dan J. Mandelstein, Mei Y. Selvage, Charles D. Wolfson
