Patent number: 8556542Abstract: The present invention relates to a drilling tool incorporating first and second ends, a cuttable and/or processable shaft extending between the ends. The first end has a drill bit to penetrate rock. The drill bit and the shaft have complementary threads. The drill bit and the shaft comprise a relative rotation stop means that ensures that the drill bit remains loose during drilling in a first direction. The invention further relates to a self drilling rock bolt, a drill bit, drill shaft and shaft coupling, and an anchoring device per se.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 2009Date of Patent: October 15, 2013Assignee: Sandvik Intellectual Property ABInventors: John Horsch, Simon Daniel Hardwicke Knight

Publication number: 20130129425Abstract: A rock bolt including an elongate shaft, and an anchoring device attached to the shaft having an expansion mechanism. The anchoring device is operable to expand radially relative to the lengthwise extent of the shaft to anchor the rock bolt within a bore drilled into a rock body. The anchoring device includes an annular band, which extends about the expansion mechanism to resist expansion of the mechanism. The band is arranged so it can enter the bore in which the bolt is to be anchored in position about the expansion mechanism and to maintain a resistance to expansion of the expansion mechanism at least until the expansion mechanism has substantially fully entered the bore. The band can be a polymeric material such as a heat shrink polymeric material in tight fitting engagement about the expansion mechanism so as to conform to the external shape of the expansion mechanism.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 16, 2011Publication date: May 23, 2013Applicant: SANDVIK INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY ABInventor: John Horsch

Patent number: 8061935Abstract: The present invention relates to a rock bolt comprising first and second ends, a shaft extending between the ends, and an anchoring device extending along a first part of the shaft adjacent the first end. The anchoring device comprises a mandrel, and at least one expansion element overlaying the mandrel. The expansion element is displaced radially outwardly on a predetermined relative movement between the mandrel and the expansion element. The expansion element is joined to a connector to form an anchor assembly. The anchor assembly is keyed to the mandrel. The anchor assembly comprises relative rotation actuator means active during rotation of the anchoring device. The invention further relates to an anchoring device per se.Type: GrantFiled: October 23, 2007Date of Patent: November 22, 2011Assignee: Sandvik Intellectual Property ABInventors: Steven Weaver, Darren Webb, John Horsch, Matthew Kenny

Patent number: 7896580Abstract: A self drilling rock bolt incorporating a shaft and an anchoring device. A first end of the bolt has a drill tip to penetrate rock and a second end is adapted to be connected to a drilling apparatus to allow rotation of, and thrust to, the bolt. A circulation passage is provided to allow fluid to be passed to the drill tip and in one form a central passage is formed in the shaft to form part of this circulation passage. The anchoring device is operative to retain the bolt when located in a drilled hole and comprises a mandrel having one or more inclined external surface mounted to, or integrally formed with, the shaft and at least one expansion element overlaying the mandrel. The expansion element(s) is displaced radially outwardly on a predetermined relative movement between the mandrel and the element.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 2006Date of Patent: March 1, 2011Assignee: Sandvik Intellectual Property ABInventors: Steven Weaver, Darren Webb, John Horsch, Matthew Kenny
