Patent number: 8013987Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed for use in fiber optic signature recognition to analyze buried optical fiber to identify a non-threat area along a fiber route and to discontinue monitoring for disturbances along that area of the cable route. The technique includes determining the location of the zone of non-threatening disturbances from comparing an optical signal to the representation of a prearranged optical signal identified as friendly. Once a zone of non-threatening disturbances is identified, all subsequent disturbances in that zone are considered friendly. Cable monitoring is discontinued in the identified zone of non-threatening disturbances so as to avoid monitoring fiber cable when permitted workers are in the area.Type: GrantFiled: August 13, 2010Date of Patent: September 6, 2011Assignee: AT&T Intellectual Property II, L.P.Inventors: John Huffman, Peter Cornell

Publication number: 20100287232Abstract: A system efficiently transfers source data from a server to at least one client. A compressed hierarchical representation, which may be used to reconstitute a “visually lossless” version of the image data, is stored at the server. The compressed hierarchical representation is decomposed from the image data using a wavelet transform with floating point kernels, to generate coefficients. The server also stores residual data that permits reconstructing the full fidelity version of the image data from the visually lossless version. The client requests compressed coefficients to reconstruct a visually lossless version of portions of the image data, and the server transfers compressed coefficients specified in the request. To generate a full fidelity image, the client upgrades the visually lossless version of the image to a full fidelity image using the residual data.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 10, 2008Publication date: November 11, 2010Applicant: KONINKLIJKE PHILIPS ELECTRONICS N.V.Inventor: John Huffman
