  • Patent number: 6136298
Abstract: A process which inhibits bacteria and caries comprising the application of an oral composition containing a substantially water insoluble noncationic antimicrobial agent, such as triclosan, xylitol, and sodium lauryl sulfate as the surfactant and dispersant for the water insoluble noncationic antimicrobial agent.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 20, 1999
Date of Patent: October 24, 2000
    Assignee: Colgate-Palmolive Company
Inventors: Abdul Gaffar, Nuran Nabi, John J. Afflitto
  • Patent number: 5525330
Abstract: Oral composition containing an effective amount of N-methylpyrrolidone alone or in combination with a noncationic antibacterial agent such as Triclosan for topical application for the prevention of plaque, gingivitis and/or caries.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 22, 1994
Date of Patent: June 11, 1996
    Assignee: Colgate Palmolive Company
Inventors: Abdul Gaffar, John J. Afflitto, Malcolm I. Williams
  • Patent number: 5472684
Abstract: A composition comprising thymol and eugenol, and optionally a sesquiterpene alcohol, such as, farnesol or has been found to have plaque and gingivitis effect. Flavoring agents may be included to provide an organoleptically acceptable oral product. Australian Tea Tree oil, sage oil and eucalyptol were found to enhance the antiplaque and antigingivitis activity of mouthrinses formulated from these compositions. These compositions exhibit an antibacterial effect vs. A. viscosus of about 25 MIC or less.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 2, 1993

  • Patent number: 5096699
Abstract: An anticalculus oral composition, which is preferably a toothpaste or a mouthrinse, includes an effective anticalculus azacycloalkane-2,2-diphosphonic acid or a salt thereof, preferably azacycloheptane-2,2-diphosphonic acid, and a polymeric polycarboxylate, which is preferably a linear copolymer of maleic anhydride and vinyl methyl ether of a molecular weight in the range of about 5,000-2,000,000, preferably about 30,000-1,500,000. The copolymer surprisingly increases the anticalculus effectiveness of the azacycloalkane-2,2-diphosphonic acid or salt thereof in such compositions, even at comparatively low concentrations of both such materials.
