  • Patent number: 4226626
Abstract: A binder composition comprising aluminum phosphate, water, material containing an alkaline earth metal and an oxide, and certain solid polyhydric alcohols.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 27, 1977
Date of Patent: October 7, 1980
    Assignee: Ashland Oil, Inc.
Inventors: Richard H. Toeniskoetter, John J. Spiwak
  • Patent number: 4096293
Abstract: Disclosed is a foundry core wash made of a hydrocarbon solvent, fumaric acid resin, particulated calcium aluminate and a suspending agent. The core wash has particular utility for sand cores made with an inorganic binder used in pressurized die casting.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 6, 1977
Date of Patent: June 20, 1978
    Assignee: Ashland Oil, Inc.
Inventors: Michael J. Skubon, John J. Spiwak, Richard F. Hanesworth
  • Patent number: 4089692
Abstract: Settable composition comprising aluminum phosphate, solid organic carboxylic acid, water, and material containing an alkaline earth metal and an oxide, and being obtained by providing an admixture of the above constituents whereby the solid organic carboxylic acid and alkaline earth material are not precontacted with each other prior to contact of the material containing an alkaline earth material with the aluminum phosphate, and process for preparing same are provided.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 18, 1975
Date of Patent: May 16, 1978
    Assignee: Ashland Oil, Inc.
Inventors: Richard H. Toeniskoetter, John J. Spiwak
  • Patent number: 4070195
Abstract: Foundry cores are fabricated by mixing aggregate (sand) with a composition comprising boronated aluminum phospate, an oxygen-containing alkaline earth metal compound capable of reacting with the aluminum phosphate, and water. The resulting foundry mix is shaped and allowed to cure at room temperature.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 14, 1976
Date of Patent: January 24, 1978
    Assignee: Ashland Oil, Inc.
Inventors: Richard H. Toeniskoetter, John J. Spiwak
  • Patent number: 4001468
Abstract: Disclosed is a method for reducing the amount of atmospheric moisture absorbed by foundry sand cores and molds. A wash coating composition is applied to the surfaces of foundry sand cores and molds. The coating comprises an organic liquid which can be chlorinated hydrocarbon, a suspending agent which can be clay, a vegetable gum or an amine-treated bentonite, a refractory powder which can be graphite, coke, mica, silica, alumina, magnesia, talc or zircon flour, and an organic polymer or copolymer, vinyl toluene/acrylate copolymer, styrene/acetylene copolymer, acrylate homopolymers and styrene/butadiene copolymers.
    Type: Grant
