  • Patent number: 6598816
Abstract: A chip detangler is provided for a machine having a discharge trough for collecting fluid containing metal chips. An auger disposed along a longitudinal axis of the trough advances the fluid and chips downstream through an exit area. The detangler preferably comprises a snagging bar fixed relative to the machine and disposed at least partially within the trough to engage nests of chips traveling past the snagging bar. The forces induced by the auger tears apart nests engaged with the snagging bar into smaller, more suitable sizes.
