Patent number: 5083938Abstract: A connector for conductively connecting a wire to a receptacle. The connector includes a hollow body having an axial bore for receiving the wire in an axial position and a housing adapted to be received in the body. Fingers on the housing urge the fingers against the wire radially inwards against shoulders on the body to axially position the wire as the housing is inserted into the body. Included is a system for connecting each of the three conductors of the stripped wire with the electrical prongs of the connector. The system includes brackets slidably mounted with the connector proximate to the prongs and which form cavities for receiving the conductors and screws for moving the brackets towards the prongs to capture the conductors in the cavities.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 1991Date of Patent: January 28, 1992Assignee: Leviton Manufacturing Co. Inc.Inventor: John M. Poliak

Patent number: 4836805Abstract: The present invention teaches a novel device that electrically connects conductors from a cable to the electrical contacts of a plug by means of a single fastener. The device comprises a shell, a plug assembly carried by the shell. The plug assembly is capable of mating engagement with other electrical contacts and has receiving means for receiving electrical conductors. A single fastener holds the terminals of the conductors in electrical connection with the electrical contacts. The single fastener includes a movable carriage on which is mounted a nut through which a screw is threaded with a head with a flange that is engaged with the wall of the plug assembly so that when the screw is rotated, the carriage moves so as to decrease or enlarge a chamber in which the conductor terminals and a portion of the electrical contacts are situated.Type: GrantFiled: November 10, 1987Date of Patent: June 6, 1989Assignee: Leviton Manufacturing Company, Inc.Inventors: John M. Poliak, Juan M. Lopez, Robert W. Gritz

Patent number: 4641905Abstract: A clamping system for holding an electrical cord to the wall plate of an electrical appliance. The wall plate forms a circular hole in which an externally threaded body having a cord passage is mounted. A flange of the body is positioned against the inner surface of the wall plate. A pair of flexibly movable arm members having opposed teeth extends in an axial direction from the outer end of the body outside the wall plate. A nut member is threaded onto the body so as to draw the flange and the nut member together with the wall plate between them. The nut member presses the teeth of the arm member together into gripping relationship with the cord. The body can be split into semicircular bodies for easy positioning of the cord.Type: GrantFiled: October 3, 1985Date of Patent: February 10, 1987Assignee: Leviton Manufacturing Company, Inc.Inventors: John M. Poliak, Herbert Anker

Patent number: 4402565Abstract: A positive retention connector has a hollow body for receiving a conductive wire and a housing insertable in the hollow body and adapted to support one or more terminal prongs connected to the wire and having means for positively engaging the periphery of the wire or its insulation for frictionally preventing relative movement between the wire and the connector. The retention means includes a plurality of prongs each having a friction surface adapted to engage the wire and a cam surface adapted to be engaged by the body as the housing is inserted therein for urging the friction surface of each prong against the wire. Means are also provided for securely attaching the terminal prongs, housing and body for retaining the wire with a minimal number of fasteners.Type: GrantFiled: November 17, 1980Date of Patent: September 6, 1983Assignee: Leviton Manufacturing Company, Inc.Inventor: John M. Poliak

Patent number: 4360242Abstract: A self-fastening electrical connector suitable for connecting an appliance to a standard AC wall receptacle has prongs pivotally mounted on a moulded body in which there is a channel adapted to receive one end of an insulated wire, the other end of which may be connected to an electrical appliance. The prongs have inwardly directed projections adapted to pierce the insulation of the wires in the channel when the prongs are urged from an open to a closed position and outwardly extending projections adapted to engage complementary notches in a plug housing. The moulded body has additional projections which engage additional notches in the plug housing, when the body and contact prongs are inserted therein, simultaneously to prevent retraction of the assembly formed by the contact prongs and moulded body from the housing.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 1981Date of Patent: November 23, 1982Assignee: Leviton Manufacturing Co., Inc.Inventors: John M. Poliak, Juan M. Lopez

Patent number: 4060305Abstract: An electrical wiring device is provided combining a strip gauge, a loop forming gauge and a wire-restraint which are coordinated to form a loop in a bare end of a solid insulated conductor wire at a location where insulation on the wire extends into the wire-restraint when the loop is secured under a terminal binding screw. The stripping gauge comprises a marking molded on the device and indicating the length of insulation to be removed from the wire prior to forming the loop in the bare end of the wire. The loop-forming gauge comprises side walls defining a cavity in the body of the device and a rounded shoulder formed at an upper end of said cavity. The bare end of the wire is confined within the cavity while the bare end of the wire is bent over the rounded shoulder into the form of the loop in the wire. The wiring device also includes wire-restraints which engage with insulation on the wire when the loop is secured under the binding screw.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 1976Date of Patent: November 29, 1977Assignee: Leviton Manufacturing Co., Inc.Inventors: John M. Poliak, Juan M. Lopez, Robert W. Gritz

Patent number: 3945702Abstract: The present invention relates to a twist-type electrical connector having an improved interlock. In the connector, a plug and a receptacle are rotated angularly relative to each other to bring electrical contacts into engagement and to prevent accidental separation of the plug and receptacle. Entrance slots in the receptacle receive the male blades and carry detents which engage with a rear edge of at least one of the male blades and hold the blade in its seated or rotated position. The detents also provide an indication as to when proper connections have been established and also, prevent accidental counterrotation of the contacts.Type: GrantFiled: October 15, 1974Date of Patent: March 23, 1976Assignee: Leviton Manufacturing Co., Inc.Inventors: John M.
