  • Publication number: 20060096394
Abstract: A non-contact, extractive sampling system and method is provided for measuring the exhaust gas and fine particle composition of various types of vehicles under actual operating conditions. A portion (or sample) of an exhaust plume of a vehicle is pulled or extracted through an extraction sampling tube, via a vacuum pump, to a remote trace gas detection system where the concentration of one or more constituents present in the sample of exhaust plume may be measured. In this regard, the invention enables vehicle emissions measurements to be made at a location remote from roadway, rather than using known, “cross-path” remote emissions sensing systems.

  • Publication number: 20040148876
Abstract: A sound barrier made from recycled concrete aggregate, the sound barrier being divided into at least two or more sections, each said section including: an inner layer for supporting the barrier, and an outer layer, said outer layer having a predetermined number of voids for absorbing sound energy at a particular frequency, wherein said respective outer layers of said at least two or more sections have different predetermined numbers of voids so as to absorb sound energy at different frequencies. A method of making a sound barrier is also provided.

  • Patent number: 6472614
Abstract: In an umbilical, one or more steel rods, which provide strength and ballast, are wound helically within the umbilical along with the steel tubes and/or elongated active umbilical elements. These steel rods replace some or all of the thermoplastic filler elements that would otherwise be included within the umbilical. An umbilical according to an embodiment of the invention may include a plurality of steel tubes helically wound around a core, and at least one substantially solid steel rod helically wound around the core, the steel rod being arranged in a void between the steel tubes. Thus, the invention avoids the need to apply additional armoring layers to the outside of the umbilical for strength and ballast.
