Patent number: 9404226Abstract: A dual-unit paving system for covering a surface. The system comprises pairs of first and second units. For each pair, the first and second unit have different respective shapes and sizes, and are configured to be matingly engageable for forming a hexagonal assembly having six, non-linear sides. The hexagonal assembly allows forming rotational tessellations. The first and second units are also shaped and configured to be matingly engageable so as to form horizontally aligned tessellations, and also vertically aligned tessellations.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 2013Date of Patent: August 2, 2016Assignee: Oldcastle Building Products Canada Inc.Inventors: Stephane Dignard, John Penterman

Publication number: 20160177532Abstract: A stackable concrete wall block is disclosed having a body with an irregular front portion and a prism shaped rear portion, the irregular front portion has a three dimensional surface structure embossed in the front face providing the appearance of natural stone and the regular rear portion facilitating stacking of like blocks. The rear portion has parallel sidewalls perpendicular to a rear wall, which are more easily manufactured by dry casting than tapered sidewalls. A lip protrudes from at least one of the sidewalls of the rear portion and is coplanar with the front face for spacing the body of the block from that of a like block placed adjacent thereto. The lateral lip generates spacing between adjacent blocks at a back terminal edge, thereby allowing the assembly of curved walls. The irregular front face extends over the lip so that the front face is continuous over the lip.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 16, 2015Publication date: June 23, 2016Inventors: Robert DAOUST, Bertin CASTONGUAY, Tamara EVANS, John PENTERMAN

Publication number: 20160010288Abstract: A paving slab is provided. The paving slab has a unitary body made of concrete- based material, the body having sidewalls extending between top and bottom faces, providing the body with a thickness. The top face is provided with longitudinal false joints defining rows extending from a first to a second side of the unitary body. The first side has a staggered outline and the second side has a stepped outline, the first and second sides being able to engage with respective first and second sides of an adjacent slab shaped as the paving slab, but rotated by 180 degrees. When several of the slabs are assembled on a surface, it creates an illusion that the surface is covered by individual plank pavers randomly assembled.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 20, 2014Publication date: January 14, 2016Applicant: Oldcastle Building Products Canada Inc.Inventors: Bertin Castonguay, John Penterman, Tamara Evans

Patent number: 8973327Abstract: The present invention concerns a masonry wall panel assembly comprising a panel and a plurality of bricks. The panel is provided with a plurality of horizontally extending contiguous channels bounded by upper and lower protruding ribs, for fitting a row of bricks. Each channel is also fitted with a plurality of compressible retaining tabs positioned along the upper rib of each channel for retaining bricks inserted therein. The bricks are provided with at least one cavity and at least one compression area so that when a brick is inserted into a channel of the panel, the brick is positioned between the ribs such that the cavity of the brick faces one or more of the tabs located on the channel so that the tabs protrude into the cavity of the brick while at the same time compressing the compression area, thereby retaining the brick within the channel.Type: GrantFiled: December 10, 2013Date of Patent: March 10, 2015Assignee: Oldcastle Building Products Canada Inc.Inventors: Michel Bouchard, John Penterman

Publication number: 20140298747Abstract: Disclosed is a wall assembly including preformed building blocks and a trellis type support member for maintaining the building blocks in place in the desired orientation. The wall assembly further includes at least one support for holding the trellis upright. The individual blocks are connected to the supporting trellis for added stability. Although not every block in the wall need be connected to the trellis support member in order to achieve the desired added stability, it is preferred to connect each block in the wall to the trellis. Connectors are provided for connecting the blocks to the trellis. Each block preferably is connected to the trellis by at least one connector, most preferably by a pair of connectors. To accommodate relative movement or shifting of the blocks during installation and in situ, the connectors are preferably movably connected to the trellis or the block, or both.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 24, 2014Publication date: October 9, 2014Applicant: LES MATERIAUX DE CONSTRUCTION OLDCASTLE CANADA INC.Inventors: Bertin CASTONGUAY, Robert DECLOS, Joel REMILLARD, John PENTERMAN

Publication number: 20120151862Abstract: A stackable concrete wall block is disclosed having a prism shaped body with front, rear top and bottom faces, in a stacked condition, and at least a pair of side walls for placement opposite a like block placed side by side to the wall block, whereby a lip protrudes from at least one of the sidewalls and is coplanar with the front face for spacing the body of the block from that of a like block placed adjacent thereto. As is the case with tapered blocks known in the art, this spacing allows the assembly of curved walls. However, a prism shaped block with parallel side walls and a lip is more easily manufactured than a tapered block with angled side walls, since no movable mold walls are required, when the block is made in a dry casting process. The front face and lip can have an embossed surface structure.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 21, 2011Publication date: June 21, 2012Applicant: LES MATERIAUX DE CONSTRUCTION OLDCASTLE CANADA, INC.Inventors: Robert DAOUST, Bertin CASTONGUAY, Tamara EVANS, John PENTERMAN

Publication number: 20120117904Abstract: A wall panel for retaining masonry units is provided. The panel has a front face provided with a plurality of tabs for supporting the lower lateral face of the masonry units and a plurality of resilient clips for resiliently biasing the upper lateral face of the units against the tabs. In an embodiment, the clips include a frontward curved hook with a downwardly pointing edge to bit on the upper face of the masonry unit and an inverted U-shaped cut-out including the curved hook and providing resiliency. In another embodiment, the clips include at least one downward resilient wing having a longitudinal axis parallel to the plane of the panel. The masonry unit is maintained in place on the panel against the tabs partly by a resilient force applied by the wing and partly by friction of the wing against the upper lateral face of the masonry unit.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 29, 2010Publication date: May 17, 2012Applicant: Oldcastle Building Products Canada Inc.Inventors: Michel Bouchard, John Penterman, Pirre Lachapelle
