  • Patent number: 5735767
Abstract: The two-speed compounder of the present invention is adapted to be mounted to an existing transmission and includes an input adapted to be driven by the transmission output shaft, an output adapted to be connected to the vehicle's driveline, a planetary gearset operably interconnecting the input to the output, and a power transfer mechanism for selectively transferring power from the input through the planetary gearset to the output at either of the direct speed ratio or the reduced speed ratio. The planetary gearset has a first gear component driven by the input, a second gear component, and a third gear component rotatably interconnecting the first and second gear components and driving the output. When it is desired to establish the direct drive speed ratio, the first and third gear components of planetary gearset are coupled together for preventing relative rotation therebetween.

  • Patent number: 5735175
Abstract: A manual transmission comprising an input shaft, an output shaft, an intermediate shaft having a transfer gear fixed thereto. First and second constant-mesh gearsets are supported between the input and output shafts and a first synchronizer clutch is provided for selectively engaging either of the first and second gearsets for drivably connecting the output shaft to the input shaft and establish first and second forward speed ratios therebetween. Third and fourth constant-mesh gearsets are supported between the input shaft and the intermediate shaft. A fifth constant-mesh gearset is supported between the input and output shafts and is meshed with the transfer gear for drivably connecting the intermediate shaft to the output shaft. A second synchronizer clutch is provided for selectively engaging either of the third and fourth gearsets for drivably connecting the intermediate shaft to the input shaft for establishing third and fourth speed ratios between the input shaft and output shaft.

  • Patent number: 5707157
Abstract: A bearing retention system for use in mounting a bearing assembly. The bearing retention system includes a retainer stud having an elongated head that is used to axially restrain a race of the bearing assembly and a locknut that is used to tighten the retainer stud.

  • Patent number: 5662543
Abstract: An improved geartrain includes a transmission unit operatively attached to a longitudinally placed engine. The transmission unit incorporates a multi-speed transmission and a lockable planetary differential and further includes an input shaft, an output shaft, and connecting drive and drive and gears. Two alternative torque paths are provided to a quill shaft from the output shaft. One of these paths is a high-range path and the other of these is a low-range path. The two torque paths are directed through a synchronizer clutch between low-range and high-range. One end of the quill shaft is connected to the low-high synchronizer clutch and the other end is connected to the lockable differential. The differential end of the quill shaft is connected to the pinion carrier of the differential. The torque delivered by the quill shaft is split by the differential when in its unlocked mode with a portion going to the rear wheels and a potion going to the front wheels.

  • Patent number: 5651748
Abstract: A two-speed differential adapted for use in motor vehicle driveline applications. The two-speed differential is capable of selectively transferring power to either a first drive mechanism for establishing a first drive speed ratio or a second drive mechanism for establishing a second drive speed ratio. The selected drive mechanism then transmits power to an output mechanism for subsequent transmission to the driving axles of the motor vehicle while permitting speed differentiation therebetween. In one aspect of the present invention, the first drive mechanism provides a "direct drive" speed ratio and the second drive mechanism provides an "overdrive" speed ratio. In another aspect of the present invention, the first drive mechanism provides a "direct drive" speed ratio and the second drive mechanism provides an "underdrive" speed ratio.

  • Patent number: 4126055
Abstract: An interlock for a manual transmission including a lever pivoted to a housing and movable between one position in which a slideable clutching member is held against axial movement when a reverse idler is engaged and a second position in which the reverse idler is held against axial movement when the slideable clutching member is in a first speed or second speed position.
