  • Patent number: 6846884
Abstract: A method for controlling resin properties during the production of polyolefins is provided. The method utilizes coordinated manipulation of reaction temperature in combination with a secondary process variable to control resin flow properties to rapidly respond to manufacturing upsets or specification changes to minimize off-grade or transition polymer material when moving from one polymer grade to another, or during a disturbance in a steady state production.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 27, 2002
Date of Patent: January 25, 2005
Assignee: Union Carbide Chemicals & Plastics Technology Corporation
Inventors: John R. Parrish, Ivan J. Hartley, Lonnie L. Pinson
  • Publication number: 20040254309
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a polymer composition that includes initiating a polymerization reaction at an initial set of polymerization parameters, determining a distribution of the at least one property of an intermediate polymer composition, and adjusting the initial set of polymerization parameters based on the distribution of the at least one property to obtain a desired distribution of the at least one property in the polymer composition. The method is suitable for use in blending and trimming operations as well as in polymerization processes.
    Type: Application
    Filed: May 14, 2004
    Publication date: December 16, 2004
Inventors: John R. Parrish, William H. Sachs, Mark L. Nelson

  • Patent number: 5627242
Abstract: Control of a gas phase polymerization reactor is performed with the product melt index, the reaction temperature, and the partial pressure of the controlling reactant.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 28, 1996
Date of Patent: May 6, 1997
Assignee: Union Carbide Chemicals & Plastics Technology Corporation
Inventors: Lance L. Jacobsen, Kiu H. Lee, John R. Parrish
  • Patent number: 5589630
Abstract: The present invention is directed to methods and apparatus for conducting gas chromatography more rapidly than previously disclosed. By means of the present invention the time necessary to conduct a gas chromatographic analysis can be reduced by more than 50%. The methods and apparatus employed reduce system dead volumes to prevent band broadening and mixing of the sample components as the gas sample is analyzed. The present invention also relates to the apparatus described above as applied to controlling chemical, refining, and other processes.
