  • Patent number: 5045146
Abstract: An applicator tool for use in applying an insulating strip on the surface of a window pane used in the assembly of multi-pane windows. The applicator tool includes a directing roller which directs the insulating strip onto the glass while maintaining only rolling contact with the surface of the glass. The directing roller is removable, is capable of adjustment in the vertical direction, and is capable of adjustment to vary the distance from the edge of the glass the insulating strip is placed. The applicator further includes two guiding rollers which maintain rolling contact with the edge of the glass. Transport rollers may be used on the applicator tool when insulating strip is applied to glass located on a flat surface. The tool also includes a rectangular block for use in molding the insulating strip around a corner.

  • Patent number: 4988400
Abstract: A method and apparatus for treating the surface of an insulating strip for use in the manufacture of multi-pane windows. The apparatus and methods of one embodiment of the invention includes a texturing roller which leaves a textured impression in a surface of the insulating strip, thereby improving the desiccating and altering the sheen and otherwise affecting the appearance of the insulating strip. According to an alternative embodiment of the invention, method and apparatus are provided for laminating a moisture vapor permeable layer onto a surface of the insulating strip. The apparatus of the invention also includes forming rollers for restoring the profile of the insulating strip.

  • Patent number: 4873803
Abstract: A window structure using a structural retainer support for converting a conventional window into a double insulated window. Sealant tape is applied to the inside periphery of the primary conventional window pane. A thin flat retainer is secured to the window adjacent to the sealant tape. The flat retainer has a flange that is integral with the retainer and extends from its midsection and lies parallel to the adjacent flat portion defining a channel therebetween. A second window pane lies in abutting contact with the flange of the retainer while also lying in abutting contact with the sealant strip which is tacky to provide a dead air space between the two window panes. A trim member is latched to the retainer by having a longitudinally extending strip means that latches into a latch means in the channel of the retainer. The trim member exerts pressure on the second window pane to firmly retain the pane against the sealant tape.

  • Patent number: 4825609
Abstract: A window structure using a retainer means for converting a single window pane into a double insulated window. Sealant tape is applied to the inside periphery of the primary window pane and then a secondary window pane is placed into abutting contact with the sealant tape. A U-shaped retainer with a gasket secured to one side thereof is moved into contact with the window pane and then secured to the window frame. A wedge is the moved into locking engagement with the retainer which exerts a constant compressive force onto the gasket and then onto the secondary window and sealant tape for the full length of the window pane. A trim member is then latched to the retainer by having its two longitudinally extending leg members locking onto spaced latch means on the retainer presenting an aesthetic appearance.

  • Patent number: 4754585
Abstract: A system for creating a dead air space between an existing window and window frame, and a piece of glazing is described. The system includes a sealing strip for spacing the piece of glazing away from the existing window and to seal the space there between when a sealing strip is properly compressed. The strip is compressed by employing a plurality of compression clips, each clip having an anchor part for mounting the clip on the window frame, a contact part spaced away from and movable with respect to said anchor part for compressing the piece of glazing against the sealing strip, and an adjustment part for adjusting the space between the anchor part and the contact part. The compression part further includes a compression gasket mounted between the piece of glazing and the compression clips.

  • Patent number: 4545549
Abstract: The winding of a tacky sealant strip by applying a non-sticking liner into contact with one surface of the strip such that the liner provides marginal edges on either side of the sealant strip. The strip and liner are wound progressively into a reel such that the liner maintains a clearance space between adjacent sealant strips while simultaneously providing a non-sticking circumferential surface for a second wound row of sealant strip material. Additional rows of such liner and strip are progressively wound on such reel.

  • Patent number: 4499703
Abstract: The method of retro-fitting a window from a single windowpane into a double windowpane wherein an existing windowpane in a sash is measured for the purpose of cutting a glass pane to the precise dimensions or slightly less than that of the exposed glass in the existing windowpane. Such glass pane has a sealant strip applied to the entire perimeter thereof. The strip can also be initially applied existing window pane. The glass and strip are then placed onto the existing windowpane to secure such glass pane to the windowpane and sash. Thereafter a stop is placed around the entire perimeter of the glass pane and is secured to the sash.

  • Patent number: 4400338
Abstract: The method of making a deformable sealant strip having a continuous strip of rigid corrugated material embedded longitudinally within mastic material wherein a continuous linear-rigid spacer is first corrugated and then fed in this condition into an extruder cross head wherein such rigid corrugated spacer is encompassed by a mastic. The strip is coiled for subsequent use in retrofitting double pane windows as well as making dual insulated windows. The extruder that receives the rigid corrugated spacer in its crosshead provides a mastic that surrounds and encompasses the spacer without deforming it.
