  • Patent number: 10592144
Abstract: Example storage systems and methods provide multichannel communication among subsystems, including a compute complex. A plurality of storage devices, a host, and a compute complex are interconnected over an interconnect fabric. The storage system is configured with a host-storage channel for communication between the host and the plurality of storage devices, host-compute channel for communication between the host and the compute complex, and a compute-storage channel for communication between the compute complex and the storage devices.

  • Patent number: 10049037
Abstract: A storage system, and a method of data management in the storage system, with non-volatile memory device characteristics determined during an inspection of non-volatile memory devices before a runtime operation of a storage device in the storage system including: a controller in the storage system: a drive-level control unit configured for an update of operational capabilities based on the non-volatile memory device characteristics during the runtime operation of the storage device and for a group of the non-volatile memory devices based on the operational capabilities; and a memory control unit, coupled to the drive-level control unit, the memory control unit configured to receive the operational capabilities for control of the non-volatile memory devices.

  • Patent number: 5917670
Abstract: Momentary contact with a defect site of a data storage disk or free particle by a magnetoresistive read element of a flying head causes momentary heating and unwanted increase in element resistance (thermal asperity) which can disrupt hard disk drive data reading operations. Since the disk carries a predetermined data format, the disk drive controller correlates location of a thermal asperity to the format and thereupon selects from several available thermal asperity recovery methods a method most likely to minimize thermal asperity effect upon disk drive operation during rereading of data at the thermal asperity location.

  • Patent number: 5465035
Abstract: A method and apparatus for moving a member provides parameters related to a given destination position of the member and corresponding to a switch time, a final time, an acceleration amplitude, and a deceleration amplitude. These parameters are used to specify a piecewise continuous function of time as an input signal. The input signal feeds a motor to move the member. The final time, switch time, acceleration amplitude, and deceleration amplitude are specified by iteratively providing minimal values for the switch time and final time while providing maximum acceptable values for the acceleration amplitude and deceleration amplitude for each possible given change in a characteristic of the movable member. A pre-shaped input signal is thereby provided which is bandwidth limited such that its energy is concentrated below the frequency of the lowest system resonance, since the signal is a piecewise continuous function comprising concatenated raised cosine and constant functions.

  • Patent number: 4890172
Abstract: A method for automatically calibrating gain parameters of a servo control including a track position detector for a computer disk drive. The method generally comprises the step of encoding AB bursts on at least one special calibration track of a disk surface in accordance with a known off center pattern signal having a preselected frequency. Servo correction number information is also encoded on the calibration track to compensate for the off center pattern of the AB bursts. A digital signal processing technique is performed on a correction signal derived from the AB bursts and servo correction number information to detect a residual signal at the preselected frequency of the off center pattern signal. The gain of the track position detector is thereafter adjusted to minimize the magnitude of the residual signal.
