  • Patent number: 9850353
Abstract: Materials including support layers and fiber-free compositions are disclosed, as well as related articles and methods for making the materials. The fiber-free compositions are formed from a precursor composition that includes a nitrile butadiene rubber, a nanoclay and a cure package including a sulfur-based curing agent. The fiber-free compositions may have a substantially reduced weight and compressive modulus in comparison to conventional rubber. Thus, the fiber-free compositions may provide improved ballistic properties in addition to reduced density and thickness. Precursor compositions for forming the insulative composition may have good flow characteristics. The fiber-free compositions may be used in a variety of applications, such as personnel body armor, ground vehicle armor and aircraft armor systems.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: December 26, 2017
    Assignee: Orbital ATK, Inc.
Inventors: Himansu M. Gajiwala, John W. Ellertson

  • Publication number: 20120065294
Abstract: Precursors, insulative compositions, an article including the insulative compositions and a method for making the insulative compositions are disclosed. The insulative compositions are formed from a precursor composition that includes a nitride butadiene rubber, a nanoclay and a cure package including a sulfur-based curing agent. The insulative compositions may have a substantially reduced weight and compressive modulus in comparison to conventional insulative rubbers. Thus, the insulative compositions may provide improved ballistic properties in addition to reduced density and thickness. Precursor compositions for forming the insulative composition may have good flow characteristics. The insulative compositions may be used in a variety of applications, such as personnel body armor, ground vehicle armor and aircraft armor systems.

  • Patent number: 7070705
Abstract: Insulation for a rocket motor is provided, as is a method for insulating a rocket motor. The insulation includes a cured elastomer and vapor-grown carbon fibers dispersed in the cured elastomer. The cured elastomer is preferably formed from a precursor composition comprising an EPDM terpolymer. Generally, the vapor-grown carbon fibers have an internal graphitized tube surrounded by a sheath of vapor-deposited amorphous carbon.

Date of Patent: July 4, 2006
    Assignee: Alliant Techsystems Inc.
Inventors: Albert R. Harvey, John W. Ellertson
  • Patent number: 7012107
Abstract: A rocket motor insulation including an elastomer-based polymer is improved in its processability by the addition of silica particles treated with a hydrophobic coating. The insulation also preferably includes a metallic coagent cross-linker, which when used in combination with the hydrophobic silica particles increases the tear strength and the elasticity of the insulation, while at the same time not adversely affecting the bonding characteristics of the insulation.

  • Publication number: 20040167278
Abstract: Disclosed are a precursor composition, a rubber component and a shear ply prepared from the precursor composition, and methods for making and using the same. The precursor composition includes a first hydrogenated nitrile conjugated-diene copolymer modified by a metal salt unsaturated carboxylic acid ester, wherein the first hydrogenated nitrile conjugated-diene copolymer is derived from a first ethylenically unsaturated nitrile and a first conjugated diene a second hydrogenated nitrile conjugated-diene copolymer derived from a second ethylenically unsaturated nitrile and a second conjugated diene; and a curing agent.
