  • Patent number: 8780952
Abstract: A roof system for an electric arc furnace includes a skew removably attached to the electric arc furnace, a lining of refractory material affixed to the skew, and a delta composed of a refractory material. The delta has at least one aperture capable of receiving an electrode. The delta fits onto and is supported by the refractory lining that is affixed to the skew.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 5, 2010
Date of Patent: July 15, 2014

  • Patent number: 4725045
Abstract: A refractory plug for blocking the tap hole of a steel making vessel or transfer ladle containing molten steel covered by a layer of slag and for minimizing turbulence caused by vortexing. The plug comprises a body having an inverted cone-shaped bottom and having an integral top portion projecting axially from a top base surface of the cone-shaped bottom portion. The plug is added to the melt just prior to or during the tapping operation to minimize vortexing and to plug the tap hole prior to egress of the slag.

  • Patent number: 4526349
Abstract: A steelmaking process and an article of manufacture for use therein, comprising the addition to the steelmaking vessel or caster tundish prior to the tapping of the finished steel of a heat-stable material having a density such that said material floats substantially at the interface between the slag and steel, said material being in the physical form of at least one annular disc. The heat-stable material may also be added to the vessel in the physical form of at least one discrete piece in addition to the annular disc.

  • Patent number: 4490173
Abstract: Steelmaking additive compositions and process of use, said compositions providing flux solubilization, desulfurization and/or removal of inclusions. The compositions comprise from about 25 to 50 wt % lime and about 75 to 50 wt % of a compound selected from the group consisting of bauxite and mixtures of calcium aluminate and bauxite; alternatively, the compositions comprise from about 40 to 70 wt % CaO, 20 to 50 wt % Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 from bauxite or mixtures of calcium aluminate and bauxite and 0 to 30 wt % MgO. The process consists of the addition, in the course of steelmaking utilizing electric furnace, basic oxygen furnace, AOD furnace or open hearth furnace means, of the steelmaking additive compositions of the invention to either the furnace, ladle and/or tundish.

  • Patent number: 4447265
Abstract: A slag-foaming composition and process for use in electric arc furnace steelmaking. The compositions comprise from about 15 to 80 wt % of a carbon source, the remainder consisting substantially of a source of an oxide of calcium; alternatively, the compositions comprise from about 15 to 30 wt % of a carbon source, the remainder consisting substantially of dolomite lime. The process consists of the addition, in the course of steelmaking using an electric arc furnace, of the steelmaking additive compositions of the invention to the charge subsequent to the initial scrap steel melt down.
