    Abstract: On-chip microplasma discharge devices capable of producing light, including ultraviolet light, capable of detecting atomic and molecular gas, and capable of detecting atomic and molecular contaminants in water samples. The on-chip microplasma discharge devices utilize nanoparticles or magnets to tune or confine microplasma discharges generated by electrodes delivering a voltage to the device. Selective control of the gaseous pressure at a value between atmospheric pressure and a vacuum pressure allows for further refinement of gas or contaminant detection, or for further tuning of the wavelength of the light to be produced.

    Abstract: An improved total dissolved gas pressure collector has a high ratio of surface area to internal volume and is configured in a compact unit which still permits good fluid flow across it. The module forms part of an improved gas sensor package having high sensitivity (e.g., less than 0.1 mm Hg, preferably less than 0.05 mm Hg) and rapid response times (e.g., less than 5 minutes to 99% of equilibrium, preferably less than 2 minutes to this value). The module comprises: a base having an opening therein; a resilient fitting in said opening in the base; a plurality of upstanding capillary tube supports; an elongated, gas-permeable capillary tube having defined internal volume and defined external surface area, the tube being closed at one end which is secured to one of the supports and having one end adapted to communicate with a total gas pressure transducer through the resilient fitting. Also provided are an acquisition and analysis system including the module, and a method for making the improved module.

    Abstract: A probe is disclosed for use with a dissolved gas meter, which is capable of measuring the concentration of dissolved gas in a fluid by measuring the permeation of gas through a membrane into an electrolyte solution. The probe includes an inner member, preferably tubular, disposed inside an outer member, preferably tubular, each tubular member having an open top end. Preferably, the inner tubular member and the outer tubular member are coaxially located such that an annular space is formed between the inner and outer tubular member. The probe further includes a plurality of electrodes operably connected inside the probe to the meter. A counter electrode extends into the central chamber of the inner tubular member, along the central axis. A working electrode is wrapped around the outer tubular member. A reference electrode is wrapped around the inner tubular member.

    Abstract: An apparatus for receiving signals in the form of strikes from fish to control the operation of a scatter-type feeder to feed the fish in response to the fish strikes. The apparatus transforms vibrations of strikes by even the tiniest of fish into electrical signals which may be amplified and analyzed by control circuitry to control the operation of the scatter-type feeder. In operation, the circuitry effectively controls the amount of feed dispensed per batch by the feeder, causes a delay time (a pause) to follow after the dispensation of one batch before it is possible for strike signals to initiate the dispensation of a second batch and requires the strike to be one of a specified magnitude before food is dispensed. Each of these controls is adjustable by knobs on a control box.

    Abstract: Apparatus for feeding animals comprising a feed storage hopper with a base plate which is adjusted so as to open a space between the base plate and the walls of the hopper. Feed is dispensed through this space in response to the operation of a motor which is attached to the base plate and which is provided with eccentric weights so as to cause vibrations which are transmitted to the base plate and into the walls of the hopper. The motor can be operated by a timer so as to enable the apparatus to deliver precisely measured quantities of feed at a given rate for a selected period of time at predetermined intervals.
