  • Patent number: 7823657
Abstract: This invention includes drilling assemblies, drilling reamer arm assemblies, and methods of drilling. In one implementation, a drilling assembly includes a cutting head apparatus configured to cut into earthen material as the cutting head apparatus is rotated. A drive shaft extends aft of and is configured to rotate the cutting head apparatus. A plurality of reamer arm assemblies projects radially outward of the drive shaft and are mounted for rotation therewith aft of the cutting head apparatus. Individual of the reamer arm assemblies include a radial inner portion extending radially outward of the drive shaft. A radial outer portion connects with and extends radially outward of the radial inner portion. The radial outer portion includes a cutter. At least one breakaway retainer fastens the radial inner and outer portions together and restrains the radial outer portion from moving relative to the radial inner portion towards the cutting head apparatus and the drive shaft. Other aspects are contemplated.

  • Patent number: 7775298
Abstract: Drilling assemblies and methods of drilling are disclosed. In one implementation, a drilling assembly includes a rotary drive apparatus configured to rotate a string of drill pipe having a cutting head at a drilling end thereof. A longitudinally elongated torque transfer tube apparatus is mounted to and extends downwardly from the rotary drive apparatus and is configured to longitudinally receive the string of drill pipe rotatably there-through. The torque transfer tube apparatus is isolated from rotation relative to the rotary drive apparatus and the string of drill pipe during drilling with the drilling assembly. A torque receiving structure is provided, and through which the torque transfer tube apparatus is upwardly and downwardly slidably received. The torque transfer tube apparatus and the torque receiving structure are isolated from rotation relative one another and the string of drill pipe during drilling with the drilling assembly.

  • Patent number: 7497268
Abstract: A drill pipe elevator includes first and second separable pieces. Each piece comprises a drill pipe-receiving groove, and a pair of diametrically opposed projections with each projection forming only part of a pair of diametrically opposed lifting posts. The first and second separable pieces when positioned together define the pair of diametrically opposed lifting posts from the pair of diametrically opposed projections and define a drill pipe-receiving passageway through the drill pipe elevator that is oriented transversely between the lifting posts.
