  • Publication number: 20080043076
Abstract: An ink container is provides ink to a vented printhead, where both the ink container and the vented printhead are positioned on a moveable carriage. The ink container receives ink from an off-carriage ink supply via an ink conduit. Air is removed from the printhead and ink container via a low pressure vacuum pump coupled to the ink container via an air conduit. The low pressure vacuum pump generates low pressure to pull air from the ink container. A higher pressure pump may be used in conjunction with a pressure relief valve that limits the pressure in the ink container.

  • Patent number: 7182447
Abstract: Some embodiments of the present invention provide an inkjet printhead within which a removable ink cartridge can be installed. Upon installation, the ink cartridge can be coupled to one or more wicks in the printhead for establishing fluid communication between one or more chambers in the ink cartridge and nozzles through which ink exits the printhead during operation. The wick can extend from a cartridge receptacle to a filter in order to transport ink from the removable cartridge to the filter. In some embodiments, the wick is retained in place within the printhead by a cap, which can be coupled to one or more filter towers. The wick can have upstream and downstream interfaces that can be the same or different in shape and/or size.

  • Patent number: 6984031
Abstract: Multi-compartmentalized ink cartridges for ink jet printers and improved methods for making the ink cartridges. The multi-compartmentalized ink cartridge includes a molded, open-topped body having an interior cavity and a printhead surface area opposite the interior cavity. A divider wall is integrally molded with the molded body structure and disposed in the interior cavity to provide at least three segregated ink chambers. The divider wall includes a first wall section and a second wall section attached substantially perpendicular to the first wall section. At least first, second, third molded ink flow paths connect each of the at least three segregated ink chambers with the printhead surface area. The second and third ink flow paths are oriented relative to their corresponding ink chambers for molding with a mold insert tool so that the cartridge body does not require a separately attached member to close mold insert tool insertion areas in the body.

  • Patent number: 6279899
Abstract: A substrate sensing mechanism is provided for use in a printer output bin. The sensing mechanism includes a flag having a shape such that when one or more substrates, which have been removed from the bin, are manually reinserted into the bin, the one or more substrates are directed beneath the flag without causing a substrate feed failure. The flag is also positioned and shaped so as to move to a full bin position when a portion of one or more curled substrates extends to or above a level of the substrate output path immediately adjacent the bin entrance.

  • Patent number: 5802432
Abstract: Toner cartridge (1) has a unitary assembly forming the handle (3a, 3b), the cover (25), side walls (33, 245) and the cleaner chamber (27) and hold the photoconductor drum (43). Each of the side walls has a U-shaped housing (35, 247) which loosely receives a pin (37a, 37b) from the side of the hopper (61). The hopper is part of a unitary assembly holding the toner adder roller (45) and the developer roller (43). Second pins (131a, 131b) from the sides of the hopper carry springs which pull the two assemblies together to press the developer roller against the photoconductor. The hopper also has flat ledges (161a, 133a) on each side for movement on roller in the printer. This further permits the cartridge to have central locating elements (29a, 29b), wing-like guides (9a, 9b) for insertion, links (13a, 13b) to open a lower shutter (7), and unobstructed ends of photoconductor shaft (47) for positively locating on that shaft.

  • Patent number: 5794102
Abstract: A toner cartridge (1) has a single molded element, molded of polystyrene, which is heat sensitive. The molded element forms front handles (3a, 3b) and a cleaner chamber (27) mounts a photoconductor drum (49). A toner hopper (61) is located generally under the handles. A developer roller (43) receives toner from the hopper and applies it to the photoconductor drum. A lower shutter (7) of polycarbonate, which is heat resistant, is mounted on actuating links (13a, 13b). When the cartridge is installed in the printer the actuating links are moved to rotate the shutter to a position covering the lower surface of the cleaner chamber, where it serves as an effective heat shield protecting the cleaner from fixing heat of the printer.

  • Patent number: 5768661
Abstract: A toner cartridge (1) has wing-like guides (9a, 9b) on opposite sides, the guides being curved to follow a curved guide track in a printer in which the cartridge is installed. The cartridge may be readily grasped by handles (3a, 3b) and inserted in the guide tracks of the printer near the top and front and then readily directed down and into the rear area of the printer. The guides are thin at their initial location of entry into the printer for easy insertion and increase to larger thickness regions (9aa, 9bb) to better guide the cartridge. The guides are a part of a unitarily molded cover assembly which includes the side walls (33, 241, 245).
