  • Patent number: 10604826
Abstract: Aluminum and aluminum alloy microstructures that are adapted for improved performance during shaping and forming production processes. Lower relative ratios of alpha fibers, particularly low-end alpha fibers, to beta fibers promotes improved formability of aluminum sheet or blanks without negatively impacting material strength. Beta fibers with higher relative ratios of S and Copper texture components improve formability and produce fewer and more uniform distortions during production. The resulting improvements in quality allow for cupping, drawing, wall ironing, shaping, and necking processes to be carried out faster and with reduced rates of spoilage.
    Type: Grant

  • Publication number: 20180126440
Abstract: Provided herein is a high-speed blow forming process for shaping aluminum containers using 3xxx can body stock alloys with high recycled content, as well as articles made by that process. A process for shaping aluminum containers as described herein includes the sequential steps of blanking out a disk from a sheet of a 3xxx series aluminum alloy; forming a bottle preform by drawing redrawing, ironing and doming the disk, placing the preform into a mold cavity, applying an axial load to the preform; and injecting an inert gas into the interior of the preform with sufficient pressure until the preform expands to fill the mold cavity.

  • Publication number: 20170314112
Abstract: Disclosed is an aluminum alloy for aluminum bottle applications, including methods of producing highly shaped aluminum products, such as bottles or cans, formed of the aluminum alloy. In some cases, the aluminum alloy has improved high strain rate formability at elevated temperatures and improved earing, which results in reduced spoilage rates. In one non-limiting example, the disclosed alloys have ?stable values greater than or equal to 0.035, where ?stable=?F??S and ?S represents the strain at which work hardening stage IV starts and ?F represents the strain at which diffuse necking ends. In some cases, the disclosed alloys have an earing balance from about ?3.5% to about 2% and a mean earing of less than or equal to 5.5%.
