  • Patent number: 7570247
Abstract: A pointing device having a puck sub-assembly and a base sub-assembly is disclosed. The puck sub-assembly includes a moveable puck having a user sensor that detects the interaction of a user and the puck. The puck is confined to move within a puck field of motion. The puck sub-assembly includes a support member having an opening therein that determines a boundary for the puck field of motion. The base sub-assembly includes a base surface over which the puck moves, a position detector that measures the position of the puck in the puck field of motion, and an attachment mechanism. The attachment mechanism connects the base sub-assembly to the puck sub-assembly such that the puck sub-assembly is easily removed. The base surface is accessible when the puck sub-assembly is separated from the base assembly. The puck sub-assembly can also include a restoring mechanism that returns the puck to a predetermined area.

  • Patent number: 7522154
Abstract: A pointing device having a moveable puck and a first belt having a slot therein in which said puck moves in a first direction is disclosed. The first belt is wrapped around the first and second belt guides such that the first belt moves back and forth in a second direction different from the first direction. A spring system returns the puck to an equilibrium position when the puck is released from a position that is displaced from the equilibrium position. A sensor measures the position of the puck. In one embodiment, the spring system includes first and second springs that are attached to a surface that is fixed with respect to the first belt. The first spring provides a restoring force in one direction when the second spring provides a restoring force in the opposite direction and vice versa.

  • Patent number: 7429976
Abstract: The pointing device has a moveable puck that moves over a surface in a puck field of motion. A position detector measures the puck position in the puck field of motion. In one embodiment, the puck includes a user sensor that detects an interaction between a user and the puck. A controller causes a cursor to move on a display in response to the puck moving in the puck field of motion when the user sensor senses the interaction between the user and the puck. The magnitude and direction of motion of the cursor is determined by the magnitude and direction of motion of the puck in the puck field of motion. In another embodiment, a restoring mechanism is provided that returns the puck to a predetermined area in the puck field of motion when the user releases the puck.

  • Patent number: 7380722
Abstract: A pointing device having a laser in a handheld housing is disclosed. The laser generates a light beam that exits the housing. A beam steering assembly causes the light beam to move relative to the housing. The pointer includes a housing orientation sensor that measures the orientation of the housing. A controller operates the beam steering assembly to compensate for changes in the housing orientation. Embodiments based on housing orientation sensors constructed from a gyroscope and a camera are described. In addition to stabilizing the light beam location, embodiments in which the beam steering assembly also causes the light beam to execute a fixed pattern can also be constructed.

  • Publication number: 20080024441
Abstract: A pointing device includes a displaceable member, a sense system, and a processing system. The displaceable member is movable in an operational zone. The sense system is operable to generate sense signals in response to a touching of the displaceable member by a user's finger and in response to different positions of the displaceable member in the operational zone. The processing system is operable to determine from the sense signals in-contact periods during which the displaceable member is in contact with the user's finger. Each of the in-contact periods has an initialization phase followed by a motion tracking phase. For each of the in-contact periods the processing system is operable to: (i) during the initialization phase, determine from the sense signals a respective current origin position in the operational zone; and (ii) during the motion tracking phase, determine from the sense signals positions of the displaceable member in relation to the current origin position.

  • Publication number: 20070139374
Abstract: A display device having a puck, a display screen, and a controller is disclosed. The puck moves in a puck field of motion on a surface, the field of motion being divided into a pointing region and a function region. The controller determines a position of the puck within the field of motion. A cursor that moves within the sub-scene in a manner controlled by the puck position in the pointing region is displayed in the second mode. The controller causes the display scene to change between modes when the puck moves between regions. The sub-scene position moves in response to the position of the puck in the function region in the first display mode.

  • Patent number: 7158115
Abstract: A puck is movable within a puck field of motion defined by a boundary. Arcuate springs connect the puck to the boundary. Each arcuate spring has a first end connected to the puck and a second end connected to the boundary, and applies a force to the puck that maintains the puck in a predetermined region of the puck field of motion when no external force is applied to the puck. In an embodiment, each arcuate spring includes a planar spiral member. The arcuate springs can also apply a force that dampens any oscillations in the puck position when the puck returns to the predetermined region in the puck field of motion. The puck can also include an electrode that is electrically connected to a point outside the puck field of motion by one of the arcuate springs.
