  • Patent number: 6884220
Abstract: The present invention concerns an optical transesophageal echocardiography probe (OPTEE) having an optical fiber bundle, a suction channel and light channels for illumination, wherein the OPTEE has a circumference along its distal tip that allows both safe insertion and insures the stability of the probe. The probe tip is generally circular in circumference, but levels off to a flat surface for a portion of the circumference, and is provided with beveled edges and corner throughout so that there are no sharp edges to traumatize the patient.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 1, 2002
Date of Patent: April 26, 2005
Assignee: The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York
Inventors: Jonathan E. Aviv, Shunichi Homma, Marco R. DiTullio, Steven Corwin

  • Patent number: 6355003
Abstract: An apparatus and method to objectively measure sensory discrimination thresholds at a test site in the upper aero digestive tract of a patient. A time and pressure controlled puff of air is delivered to the input of a Y-shaped tube; one output branch of the Y-shaped tube delivers the puff of air to the patient and the other output branch delivers the puff of air to a pressure transducer, for measurement and display of the pressure.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 23, 2000
Date of Patent: March 12, 2002
Assignee: The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York
Inventors: Jonathan E. Aviv, John H. Martin
