    Abstract: Method and apparatus for performing a critical task using a load that is speculative. Specifically, a method of computation for performing critical tasks with speculative operations is described in one embodiment. The critical task is performed to achieve a first result while a condition of a processor used to perform said critical task is unknown. In parallel, the condition of the processor is determined. If the condition is as expected, then the first result is committed. If the condition is not as expected, then the condition is fixed to be as expected. The first result benignly fails. Also, the critical task is re-performed using the operation that is speculative resulting in a second result. The second result is then committed.

    Abstract: A computer system includes a processor for executing a program and an interruption handler from a memory. The processor includes an instruction pointer indicating a memory location of a current executing instruction. The processor executes a trampoline check instruction in the program which tests a condition and if the condition is true, causes an interruption and supplies an address displacement. The interruption handler responds to the interruption and restarts execution of the program at a restart point indicating a memory location of a special handler in the program. The restart point is a sum of the address displacement and a value of the instruction pointer at the time of the interruption. If the condition is false, normal control flow of the program is continued.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus calculate a page table index from a virtual address. Employs a combined hash algorithm that supports two different hash page table configurations. A “short format” page table is provided for each virtual region, is linear, has a linear entry for each translation in the region, and does not store tags or chain links. A single “long format” page table is provided for the entire system, supports chained segments, and includes hash tag fields. The method of the present invention forms an entry address from a virtual address, with the entry address referencing an entry of the page table. To form the entry address, first a hash page number is formed from the virtual address by shifting the virtual address right based on the page size of the region of the virtual address.

    Abstract: A computer-implemented method and apparatus for transferring the contents of a general register, in a register stack, to a location in a backing store in a main memory are described. When transferring the contents of a general register to a location in the backing store, the invention proposes collecting attribute bits included in each general register of a predetermined group of registers in a temporary collection register. Once the temporary collection register has been filled, the contents of this register are written to the next available location in the backing store. Similarly, on the restoration of registers from the backing store, a collection of attribute bits saved in the backing register is transferred to a temporary collection register. Thereafter, each attribute bit is saved together with associated data into a general register, thereby to restore the former contents of each general register.

    Abstract: A method for returning from an interrupting context to an interrupted context in a processor is disclosed. The processor executes a programmed flow of instructions. The processor includes a register stack (RS) and a register stack engine (RSE) to exchange information between the RS and the storage area. The method includes the following steps: (a.) A first pointer (PTR) is generated. The pointer (PTR) points to a location in the storage area where dirty registers (previously unsaved) of an interrupted context are stored; (b.) It is determined whether a mathematical relation is valid between the first pointer and the second pointer (BSPLOAD) to a location in the storage area from where the RSE is configured to load dirty register values into the RS; (c) The second pointer is caused to point to a next location in the storage area if the relation is valid; and (d) A register of the RS is loaded with a content of the next location in the storage area until the mathematical relation becomes invalid.

The method includes the following steps: a state of the RSE of the interrupted context is preserved; a COVER instruction is issued; a first (BSPSTORE) pointer is preserved. The first pointer points to a location in the storage area, of the interrupted context, where a next register of the second portion is to be written; first pointer is written with a value corresponding to the interrupting context; and a second pointer (BSP) is preserved. The new first and second pointers in the interrupting context define the storage area of RS values associated with the interrupted context.

    Abstract: The inventive system and method allows for software control of hardware drral of exceptions in speculative operations, and comprises three components. The first component is processor stored information which reflects the code generation strategy of applications and is used by hardware and the operating system to control exception deferral. The second component is processor stored information set by the operating system to specify to hardware which type of faults should be automatically deferred. The third component is further processor stored information which indicates to the hardware to defer certain exception causing aspects of the speculative operation, while performing other non excepting aspects of the speculative operation. The stored information is set after the operating system exception handler has unsuccessfully attempted fault resolution.
