  • Patent number: 8056793
Abstract: A friction surfacing apparatus and method for depositing one or more metals, metal alloys, or other materials is disclosed. The friction surfacing apparatus includes a pin tool holder, a non-consumable shoulder having an inside diameter and an outside diameter, the inside diameter terminating at an end wall and includes an angled side wall that forms a substantially frustoconical opening at one end, and a consumable pin tool coupled to the pin tool holder and at least partially protruding from the end wall of the shoulder. The shoulder is maintained at a predetermined distance from a surface of a workpiece such that the consumable pin tool deposits pin tool material onto the surface of the workpiece during a friction surfacing operation.

Date of Patent: November 15, 2011
    Assignee: General Electric Company
Inventors: Timothy Hanlon, Jason Bernard Fritz, Jeffrey Jason Bernath, Alexander Banning Channell, Jonathan Paul Blank, Sergey Eduardovich Kalabekov, Jonathan Robert Hootman, Timothy Joseph Trapp

  • Publication number: 20080145691
Abstract: An article is presented where the article comprises an alloy having a minor phase dispersed within a matrix phase and a plurality of substantially equiaxed grains. The article further comprises a continuous gradient in grain size from a first grain size at an outer surface of the article to a second grain size at an inner portion of the article, wherein the first grain size is less than the second grain size. Methods for forming the article using high deformation processing are also presented, where the processing includes extruding the feedstock material through a die having a twist channel configured to apply a torsional strain to the feedstock material as it passes through the die to form an extruded billet.

  • Patent number: 7306859
Abstract: A coating process and TBC system suitable for protecting the surface of a component subjected to a hostile thermal environment. The TBC system has a first layer with a columnar microstructure, and a second layer on the first layer and with a microstructure characterized by irregular flattened grains. According to one aspect, the first layer is present and the second layer is not present on a first surface portion of the component, and the first and second layers are both present on a second surface portion of the component. According to another aspect, the first and second layers contain the same base ceramic compound.
