  • Patent number: 4310031
Abstract: Apparatus is provided for laying out and evenly distributing the coils of severed hot strands of wire emerging from a rolling mill. In order to maintain the line in continuous operation and in order to distribute the severed cooled strands to the subsequent bundling apparatus, the arrangement herein provides for dual conveyors each preceded by its own laying tube and a switch for selectively feeding the strands to one or other of the conveyors. By controlling the speed of one relative to the other of the dual conveyors, the strands may be selectively converged in even distribution for subsequent processing. The dual conveyors may be side by side or superimposed one above the other. With the latter arrangement, the upper conveyor may be mounted to pivot into and out of the line of the lower conveyor for the sequential feeding of the coils to the following line.

  • Patent number: 4176535
Abstract: A combined apparatus is provided for handling rolled material issuing from a rolling mill finishing line. An arrangement is provided for cropping the head and tail ends of the rolled material running at high speed after it is divided into the desired lengths and for diverting the cropped lengths to a path separate from the cropped ends. Also, arrangements are provided for coordinating the actual speed of the issuing rolled material with the rotary shears for dividing the rolled material into lengths. In addition, arrangements are provided for the controlled chopping of the cropped ends in relation to the speed of the line.

  • Patent number: 4148387
Abstract: The invention relates to a switch for wire mills and refined iron mills for selecting one of two or more continuing tubular guides for rolled material arriving successively in one guide. A guide tube is used which may be oriented at the inlet orifices of the continuing guides, and which is connected to the arrival guide, whereby the guide tube may be set, while a rolled material strand is being forwarded to one of the continuing guides, for one of the other continuing guides.

  • Patent number: 4027565
Abstract: A device is provided for the high speed severing into lengths of an elongated material product issuing continuously at high speeds from refined steel mills or wire mills. The product may be rolled wire, for example, moving continuously from the mill through rotating guides. The invention incorporates cooperating radially movable shears directly into two cooperating rotating guides for the wire. The shears are connected to reversible pressure fluid piston and cylinder arrangements also incorporated into the cooperating rotating guides. Actuation of the shears from retracted to cutting positions and vice versa is through pressure fluid lines positioned in the axis of the rotating guides and connected to controls for coordinating the speed of the material to be cut and the speed of the rotating guides with the movement of the shears.

  • Patent number: 3945585
Abstract: The disclosure relates to a coiling stand arranged to receive hot wire-like material, directly from a rolling mill or other forming mill and to wind the material into convenient coils. The coiling stand is positioned to receive wire-like material tangentially, and includes a novel and highly effective sleeve-like guide bell, which surrounds a portion of the spool. As a fresh end of hot wire-like material leaves the coil stand at high speed and approaches the coiling stand, it is directed into the space between the spool and the surrounding guide bell. The leading end of the material is thus captured and guided to the desired position, as the winding operation is initiated. As soon as a few convolutions of the coil are wound, the guide bell may be retracted axially. Desirably, however, it is not fully retracted, but continues to isolate the initial one or two convolutions, for easy subsequent access.
