  • Patent number: 7293779
Abstract: A gasket includes an intermediate layer having resilient sealing beads flanked by stopper beads. The three-layer gasket, particularly designed for heavy duty racing engines, provides a relatively robust cross-section in web-areas between cylinder bore apertures. A thin bottom layer includes wrap-around flanged portions extending about cylinder bore edges of the intermediate layer to partially overlap cylinder bore aperture areas of that layer. The flanged portions may include a plurality of waves to increase forces to generate the seal. A thin top layer overlies the intermediate layer, as well as the overlapping portions of the bottom layer. In one described embodiment, the overlapping portions are limited to cylinder bore edges between cylinder bores. As a between-engine-overhaul indication of engine health, the top gasket layer is adapted via plastic deformation to form a permanent indentation in an aluminum cylinder head to signal excessive engine operation.

  • Patent number: 6957815
Abstract: A multi-layer steel (MLS) cylinder head gasket includes a unitary stopper layer interposed between mirror image beaded outer layers. A stopper ring situated about the boundary of a combustion opening on the stopper layer is formed by folding over the boundary edge of the stopper layer material. The stopper ring pre-stresses the gasket interface about the combustion opening during securement of a cylinder head to an engine block. The stopper layer includes at least one raised epoxy bead structure, circumferentially and closely surrounding the outside edge of the stopper ring. The epoxy bead acts to spread load, and hence to avoid point loads at the combustion aperture boundary. The epoxy bead is applied to the gasket by screen-printing, and may incorporate a powdered metal for limiting bead resiliency. The bead height is greater than the thickness of the stopper ring, to reduce risk of splitting the stopper layer material.

  • Patent number: 6543787
Abstract: A unitary boundary gasket adapted for sealing between flanged portions of two axially mated surfaces of rigid metallic members, such as between an engine block and an associated engine oil pan. In one preferred form, the gasket has a rectilinearly shaped annular body, and is formed of a one-piece radially outermost rigid metallic carrier having a first axial thickness, and adhesively bonded to a one-piece radially innermost elastomeric sealing body. The sealing body, bonded to the metallic carrier at the radially innermost edge of the carrier, includes a plurality of spaced apertures adapted for accommodating passage of bolt members for fastening said flanged portions together about the gasket body. Intermediate the apertures are longitudinally extending waffle pattern regions designed for sealing against leakage of fluids between said apertures. In one preferred form, a plurality of sealing beads extend medially between each waffle pattern region.

  • Patent number: 5511518
Abstract: A sealing assembly for use with an internal combustion engine includes a gasket of elastomeric material inserted within a groove formed in the surface of an engine part. The gasket has an anchoring portion which fits within the groove and a sealing portion extending outside of said groove. The bottom, side and top walls of the groove form a retaining portion which is at least 5% larger than the anchoring portion of the gasket at the time of assembly. The anchoring portion may expand and fill the retaining portion of the groove upon exposure to the engine fluids. At least one top wall of the retaining portion of the groove opposes a shoulder of the anchoring portion of the gasket at an interior angle of not more than about ninety degrees.

  • Patent number: 4796897
Abstract: A head gasket having a beam functioning fire ring in the combustion opening and having a bead overlying a recess, the recess having a width at least twice as great as the width of the bead, the height of the bead being no greater than the height of the recess and preferably no more than 60% of the height of the recess. The fire ring may be a separate annulus disposed in the combustion opening and have a pair of spaced feet straddling and defining the recess.

  • Patent number: 4655463
Abstract: A gasket assembly having improved compression stoppers. The stoppers facilitate the rapid, easy and certain securance of the stoppers in a predetermined relationship in a gasket assembly. A gasket assembly, in accordance with this invention desirably comprises a main body having a pair of side sections, each comprising a self supporting core member and compressible facings fast with the core member and defining fastener openings through which fasteners are adapted to pass. The core members extend along the side sections of the gasket assembly, said facings and said core providing side sections of a first thickness. The main body further comprises end portions joining the side sections. Separate compression stoppers are provided in the fastener openings.

  • Patent number: 4625979
Abstract: A gasket assembly having a gasket member defining an opening therethrough and a substantially flat surface portion around the opening is disclosed herein. A first low extrusion-resistant elastomeric sealing bead is disposed on the flat surface portion of the gasket member circumscribing the opening. A second high extrusion-resistant bead is disposed on the flat surface portion of the gasket member circumscribing the opening and lying closely adjacent to the first sealing bead. A third high extrusion-resistant bead is disposed on the flat surface portion of the gasket member circumscribing the opening and lying closely adjacent to the first sealing bead, the second and third beads straddling the first sealing bead. The first sealing bead has an overall height which is greater than the heights of the second and third beads. When said gasket member is placed under compression, the second and third beads restrict displacement of the first bead to prevent extrusion of the first sealing bead.

  • Patent number: 4597583
Abstract: An oil pan cover or the like and gasket assembly for juxtaposition with a member to be sealed thereby, the cover providing a surface defining a sealing flange adapted to confront the surface of a member to be sealed, the flange surface defining an elongated groove for receiving the gasket assembly. The groove is T-shaped and includes a first internal groove section and a second wider groove section intersecting the surface of the flange. The gasket assembly is T-shaped and has an elongated body generally complementary in configuration to the groove, and includes a first elongated elastomeric sealing section adapted to be positioned and compressed between the wider groove section and the member to provide a seal therebetween, and a second elastomeric rigidifying bead, the sealing section and the bead being integrally molded, and a reinforcing wire fast with the rigidifying bead to rigidify the elongated body.

  • Patent number: 4535996
Abstract: A unitary, molded gasket assembly having a pair of side sections, each having a rigid assembly comprising a rigid core member and stop members. The stop members each define a fastener aperture through which a fastener is adapted to pass. The rigid core members extend along side portions of the gasket assembly. Elastomeric envelopes envelop each of the core members and provide side sections of a first thickness. Elastomeric end portions join the envelope. The stop members are hard, rigid, and high-temperature resistant, and are of a second thickness less than the first thickness. When the gasket assembly is compressed between elements to be sealed, the stop members limit compression of the gasket and limit displacement of the elastomeric envelopes. Each side section envelope is preferably provided with undercuts at its edges, the undercuts extending inwardly from the edges to over the core to limit displacement of the elastomer at the core edges.
