    Abstract: An assembly for processing paper tape for data processing and communication applications. The punch and reader are in a common housing which includes a self contained chad box. The assembly has a substantially flat bottom surface thus permitting the assembly to be mounted on a table. The entire operating mechanism is arranged such that it is mechanically isolated from the housing.The punch and reader assemblies utilize identical paper drive assemblies which are mechanically linked by a rigid bar. The one drive assembly is driven from an eccentric which in turn is driven by a flexible belt coupled to a motor pulley.

    Abstract: A wire matrix printer includes a print head having one or more banks of a plurality of generally horizontal, vertically spaced print wires arranged parallel to each other for linear reciprocation toward and away from a recording surface by associated actuators. The print wires in each bank are of progressively varying length so that the wire associated with the actuator furthest from the recording surface is the longest and each adjacent wire is a predetermined amount shorter than the preceding wire. Outer or actuator ends of the wires define a vertically spaced and stepped array. The actuators in each bank are also in an array vertically spaced and stepped and are respectively coupled to the outer print wire ends by armatures. The inner or printing ends of the wires define a vertically spaced, nearly planar array near the recording surface, and a spaced, planar array at such surface.

    Abstract: A method of effecting time-linear travel of a lead screw-driven, carriage-mounted print head during the print cycle encompassed within a predetermined period of each motor-initiated advancement thereof. This is accomplished by incorporating a predetermined maximum possible amount of built-in backlash between the threaded coupling member and the lead screw, and by utilizing a predetermined time delay before printing commences so as to compensate for the backlash. The latter is employed to minimize friction and wear due selectively to any tolerance variations in the lead screw-drive nut threads, bow in the lead screw, or misalignment thereof relative to the carriage guide rods. As a result, wear of the moving parts that produce the friction is minimized.
