    Abstract: A stainless steel sheet suitable for use in the manufacture of an exhaust component. The steel sheet has at least one surface pretreated with a protective coating resistant to delamination at temperatures up to about 540.degree. C. including an inner inorganic portion and an outer organic portion. The inorganic portion includes at least 50 mg/m.sup.2 of a chromium based conversion coating having a thickness no greater then 0.02 mm. The conversion coating contains particulate silica with the weight ratio of chromium to silica within the range of 1:1 to 2:1. The outer organic portion includes a silicone paint containing 40-60 wt. % silicone resin. The silicone paint is dried at a temperature less than 300.degree. C. in less than one minute and then coated with a copolymer of a thermoplastic acrylic and a lubricant or a polymeric olefin. The acrylic copolymer contains 5-70 wt. % of the lubricant and the polymeric olefin contains 90% olefin resin.

The steel has particular utility in fabrication of cold headed fasteners.

    Abstract: A ferritic steel having improved creep or sag resistance and oxidation resistance at temperatures ranging from about 732.degree. to 1093.degree. C. after a final anneal at 1010.degree. to 1120.degree. C., together with good weldability, the steel consisting essentially of, by weight percent, from about 0.01% to 0.06% carbon, about 1% maximum manganese, about 2% maximum silicon, about 1% to about 20% chromium, about 0.5% maximum nickel, about 0.5% to 2% aluminum, about 0.1% to 0.05% nitrogen, 1.0% maximum titanium, with a minimum titanium content of 4 times the percent carbon plus 3.5 times the percent nitrogen, about 0.1% to 1.0% columbium, with the sum total of titanium plus columbium not exceeding about 1.2%, and remainder essentially iron. In the form of cold reduced strip and sheet stock the steel has particular utility in motor vehicle components.

    Abstract: Internally nitrided ferritic stainless steel cold reduced strip and sheet and products fabricated therefrom having an elevated temperature creep strength and oxidation resistance superior to AISI Type 316 austenitic stainless steel, and good room temperature formability. A non-hardenble AISI Type 400 series ferritic stainless steel containing a nitride former (titanium, zirconium, hafnium, columbium, vanadium, tantalum or rare earth metals) in excess of the amount required to react completely with residual nitrogen and carbon in the steel is reacted with nitrogen internally by heat treatment in a nitrogen-hydrogen atmosphere at a temperature of at least about 800.degree. C but below that at which austenite will form under conditions precluding formation of chromium nitrides, chromium oxides, and austenite.
