Publication number: 20220107321Abstract: Repression of CD36 vasculature in stromal tissues surrounding a pre-cancerous lesion provides is indicative of increased risk of subsequent progression to invasive cancer. Methods of assessing progression risk by measuring the abundance of CD36 vasculature in stromal tissues surrounding a precancerous lesion are provided, useful for various cancer types, including for assessing the risk of DCIS progression to breast cancer. Immunohistochemical analysis methods and diagnostic thresholds are provided, as well as associated methods of treatment and diagnostic kits.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 16, 2020Publication date: April 7, 2022Applicant: The Regents of the University of CaliforniaInventors: Thea Tlsty, Joseph Caruso, Karla Kerlikowske, Annette Molinaro, RosaAnna DeFilippis

Publication number: 20080057466Abstract: A computer implemented method includes providing a first set of digital data corresponding to an upper arch image of at least a portion of an upper dental arch of a patient, providing a second set of digital data corresponding to a lower arch image of at least a portion of a lower dental arch of the patient, providing bite alignment data representative of the spatial relationship between the upper dental arch and the lower dental arch of the patient, and aligning the upper and lower arch images relative to one another based on the bite alignment data until an aligned upper and lower arch image is attained. The aligned upper and lower arch images are moved towards each other until a first contact point is detected and at least one of the upper and lower arch images is moved relative to the other in one or more directions to a plurality of positions for determining optimal occlusion position of the lower and upper dental arches.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 31, 2007Publication date: March 6, 2008Applicant: 3M Innovative Properties CompanyInventors: Russell Jordan, James Hansen, Joseph Caruso, Patrick Dufour, Baruch Nissenbaum

Publication number: 20070129711Abstract: Photocosmetic device for use in medical or non-medical environments (e.g., a home, barbershop, or spa), which can be used for a variety of tissue treatments. Radiation is delivered to the tissue via optical systems designed to pattern the radiation and project the radiation to a particular depth. The device has a variety of cooling systems including phase change cooling solids and liquids to cool treated skin and the radiation sources. Contact sensors and motion sensor may be used to enhance treatment. The device may be modular to facilitate manufacture and replacement of parts.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 22, 2006Publication date: June 7, 2007Inventors: Gregory Altshuler, Joseph Caruso, Henry Zenzie, James Burke, Andrei Erofeev

Publication number: 20070122764Abstract: A self-positioning and self-starting, tapered thread, orthodontic bone screw (25) for use in intra-oral corrections that serves as a craniomaxillofacial rigid post for orthodontic appliance fixation. The tip of the bone screw incorporates a defined sharp pin-point tack tip (2) to easily pierce the soft tissue and initially penetrate into the host bone for alignment and penetration. In series with the tack tip is a self-tapping, double, tapered thread (11) which allows an orthodontist to insert the bone screw post into the host bone in a single operation without the need for opening or flapping the surrounding soft tissue. As the bone screw penetrates the bone site, the tapered threads (24) allow for easy thread pick-up into the host bone while the increasing outer diameter of the thread (26) rigidly locks into the crestal bone. Once attached and fixated in the host bone, the distal cylindrical dome shaped driver head (12) acts as the fixation post for the anchorage of orthodontic appliances.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 28, 2005Publication date: May 31, 2007Inventors: Alan Balfour, William Machata, Joseph Caruso, Joseph Carchidi

Publication number: 20060253176Abstract: This invention relates generally to methods and apparatus for utilizing energy, e.g., optical radiation, to treat various dermatological and cosmetic conditions. A handheld dermatological device that facilitates viewing and measuring parameters of a treatment area before, during, and after application of a treatment modality, and methods of use therefor, are disclosed. The device can include a deflective device that can steer radiation to control a target position of the radiation. The device can also include a control device to allow a user to control the radiation through manipulation of the deflective device.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 17, 2006Publication date: November 9, 2006Applicant: PALOMAR MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIES, INC.Inventors: Joseph Caruso, Gregory Altshuler, Liam O'Shea
