Patent number: 9032709Abstract: Provided is an emission treatment system and method for simultaneously remediating the nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter, and gaseous hydrocarbons present in diesel engine exhaust streams. The emission treatment system has an oxidation catalyst upstream of a soot filter coated with a material effective in the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) of NOx by a reductant, e.g., ammonia. Also provided is a method for disposing an SCR catalyst composition on a wall flow monolith that provides adequate catalyst loading, but does not result in unsuitable back pressures in the exhaust.Type: GrantFiled: February 20, 2007Date of Patent: May 19, 2015Assignee: BASF CorporationInventors: Joseph Allan Patchett, Joseph Charles Dettling, Elizabeth Alina Przybylski

Patent number: 8119075Abstract: The present invention is directed to an exhaust gas treatment system and method for removing particulate matter and nitrogen oxides from diesel engine exhaust streams. More specifically, the present invention relates to an emission treatment system that effectively provides simultaneous treatment of the particulate matter, as well as the NOx and other gaseous components of diesel engine exhaust. The emission treatment system uses an integrated soot filter coated with a catalyst washcoat composition comprising sub-micron particles, thereby providing an ultra-thin sub-micron washcoat layer showing improved catalyst performance without causing excessive backpressure.Type: GrantFiled: November 10, 2005Date of Patent: February 21, 2012Assignee: BASF CorporationInventors: Joseph Charles Dettling, Yuejin Li

The system has an injector for periodically metering ammonia or an ammonia precursor into an exhaust stream; and a first substrate with a first SCR catalyst composition, downstream of the injector. The first substrate has an inlet end, an outlet end, a length extending between the inlet end to the outlet end, wall elements and a plurality of passages defined by the wall elements. The first SCR catalyst composition is disposed on the wall elements from the inlet end toward the outlet end to a length that is less than the substrate's axial length to form an inlet zone. The first substrate also has an NH3 destruction catalyst composition with a platinum group metal component dispersed on a refractory metal oxide.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 18, 2008Publication date: April 23, 2009Applicant: BASF Catalysts LLCInventors: Joseph Allan Patchett, Joseph Charles Dettling

Patent number: 7521033Abstract: The present invention is directed to an improved apparatus and method of minimizing catalyst poisoning from exhaust gas streams containing inorganic deposits and particulate matter. More specifically, the present invention is directed to an upstream metallic foam trap and a downstream monolithic precious metal catalyst, wherein the trap physically blocks inorganic deposits and particulate matter from poisoning the downstream catalyst. The present invention is also directed to a metallic foam trap containing a coat comprising a first metallic thermal arc sprayed layer and optionally a second refractory metal oxide.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 2005Date of Patent: April 21, 2009Assignee: BASF Catalysts LLCInventors: Michael Patrick Galligan, Joseph Charles Dettling

Patent number: 6171556Abstract: A method and apparatus in accordance with the invention is described which comprises treating an engine exhaust gas stream containing hydrocarbons and other pollutants. The method of this invention comprises the steps of flowing the exhaust gas stream through a catalytic member comprising a monolith body having a first catalyst zone and a second catalyst zone therein to contact a catalyst in a first catalyst zone to convert at least some of the pollutants in the exhaust gas stream into innocuous products. The exhaust gas stream is then discharged from the catalytic member and flowed through an adsorbent zone to adsorb at least some of the hydrocarbon pollutants with an adsorbent composition. The exhaust gas stream is then discharged from the adsorbent zone and flowed to the second catalyst zone to convert at least some of the pollutants into innocuous products. The exhaust gas stream, so treated, is then discharged to the atmosphere through suitable discharge means.Type: GrantFiled: November 19, 1993Date of Patent: January 9, 2001Assignee: Engelhard CorporationInventors: Patrick Lee Burk, John Karl Hochmuth, Joseph Charles Dettling, Ronald Marshall Heck, John Joseph Steger, Samuel Jack Tauster
