  • Publication number: 20230220164
Abstract: A single vessel process for producing heteroleptic POSS compositions. The process involves the addition of two or more different organosilanes into a reactor containing a solvent. A base catalyst is added to the reactor to hydrolytically assemble the POSS cage core and statistically distribute the organic groups from the organosilanes around the periphery of the POSS cage core. An acid is then added to neutralize or quench the base catalyst. The product is washed and the remaining solvent is removed to recover the heteroleptic POSS. In some alternate embodiments, the product is filtered to recover the heteroleptic POSS. The heteroleptic POSS compositions produced by this process are able to provide an envelope of desirable effects. The heteroleptic POSS compositions may be used as additives for optimizing the performance attributes of coatings, biological materials, thermoplastics, thermoset, and gel polymer systems.

  • Publication number: 20220211903
Abstract: A fluidic hemostat agent comprising a solid hemostatic additive suspended in a silanol carrier fluid to form a heterogeneous mixture that exhibits sufficient flowability to allow for injection and proliferation, while simultaneously having sufficient adhesive and viscoelastic characteristics to remain at the application site and enable the clotting cascade time to form a thrombus. The silanol carrier fluid preferably comprises liquid silanol-bearing POSS molecules, while the solid hemostatic additive preferably is selected from the group consisting of kaolin, chitin, chitosan, cellulose, keratin pectin, acetylated glucosamine, dry fibrin, gelatin, and calcium salts. A preferred silanol species is iso-octylPOSS trisilanol having the molecular representation [(i-ocylSiO1.5)4(i-octyl(OH)SiO1.0)3]?7.

  • Publication number: 20110092661
Abstract: A method of using metallized and nonmetallized nanoscopic silicon containing agents for physical property control, radiation absorption, and in situ formation of nanoscopic glass layers on material surfaces. Because of their tailorable compatibility with polymers, metals, composites, ceramics, glasses and biological materials, nanoscopic silicon containing agents can be readily and selectively incorporated into materials at the nanometer level by direct mixing processes. Properties improved include gas and liquid barrier, stain resistance, resistance to environmental degradation, radiation absorption, adhesion, printability, time dependent mechanical and thermal properties such as heat distortion, creep, compression set, shrinkage, modulus, hardness and abrasion resistance, electrical and thermal conductivity, and fire resistance.

  • Patent number: 7897667
Abstract: A method of using fluorinated-nanostructured POSS chemicals as alloying agents for the reinforcement of polymer microstructures, including polymer coils, domains, chains, and segments, at the molecular level. Because of their tailorable compatibility with nonfluorinated polymers, nanostructured chemicals can be readily and selectively incorporated into polymers by direct blending processes. The incorporation of a nanostructured chemical into a polymer favorably impacts a multitude of polymer physical properties. Properties most favorably improved are surface properties, such as lubricity, contact angle, water repellency, deicing, surface tension, and abrasion resistance. Improved surface properties may be useful for applications such as anti-icing surfaces, non-wetting surfaces, low friction surfaces, self cleaning. Other properties improved include time dependent mechanical and thermal properties such as heat distortion, creep, compression set, shrinkage, modulus, hardness and biological compatibility.

  • Publication number: 20100137464
Abstract: The use of nanostructured chemicals based on polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) and polyhedral oligomeric silicates (POS) are used to control porosity in organic and inorganic media. The precisely defined nanoscopic dimensions of this class of chemicals enables porosity to be both created (increased) or reduced (decreased) as desired. The thermal and chemical stability of the POSS/POS nanostructures and the ability of these nano-building blocks to be selectively placed or rationally assembled with both inorganic and organic material mediums allow tailoring of porosity.

  • Patent number: 7572872
Abstract: Nanostructured chemicals such as polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes, polyhedral oligomeric silicates, and polyhedral oligomeric metallasesquioxanes are attached to living and nonliving systems as biomaterials to provide a nanoscopic topology that favors biomimetic function and cellular modulation. The resulting surface is nanoscopically thin, nanoscopically dispersed, provides systematic chemistry, surface area, surface volume, surface topology, and is essentially free of impurities, and has controllable properties through selection of composition, R groups, nanostructure size and topology. Highly shape specific and chemically tailorable nanostructured molecules are sized to biological material dimensions and are compatible with all sterilization methods.
