  • Publication number: 20230350126
Abstract: Examples disclosed herein include a plate light guide configured to guide light along a length of a light guide. The light guided along the length of the light guide propagates in at least two directional modes: a first directional mode and a second directional mode. Light guided in a first directional mode has one or both of a transverse component that is greater than and a vertical component that is less than respective transverse and vertical components of light guided in the second directional mode. Also included is a global mode mixer. The global mode mixer extends along the length of the light guide length and is configured to convert a portion of the light guided in a first directional mode into a second directional mode. A scattering element preferentially scatters light in the second directional mode out of the light guide.

  • Publication number: 20220244449
Abstract: A multibeam backlight and multiview display employ a multibeam element having a shaped edge with a shape configured to disperse spurious diffraction components. The multibeam backlight includes a light guide configured to guide light in a propagation direction and a plurality of multibeam elements spaced apart from one another across the light guide, the multibeam element plurality being configured to scatter out the guided light as emitted light. A multibeam element of the multibeam element plurality includes the shaped edge oriented orthogonal to the propagation direction. The shape of the shaped edge is configured to disperse spurious diffraction components in the emitted light associated with an interaction between the guided light and the multibeam element. The multiview display includes a light valve array configured to modulate the emitted light as a multiview image having a plurality of views in a similar plurality of different view directions.

  • Publication number: 20220236473
Abstract: A multibeam backlight and multiview display employ a filling fraction of a diffraction grating to control diffractive scattering efficiency. The multibeam backlight includes a light guide configured to guide light and a plurality of multibeam elements, a multibeam element of the multibeam element plurality including a diffraction grating. The multibeam element is configured to diffractively scatter a portion of the guided light out of the light guide as directional light beams having different directions corresponding to different view directions of a multiview display. A filling fraction of diffractive features within the diffraction grating is configured to control a diffractive scattering efficiency of the multibeam element. The multiview display further includes an array of light valves configured to modulate the directional light beams to provide a multiview image. The filling fraction may be a ratio of diffractive features to filling features within the diffraction grating.

  • Patent number: 11378729
Abstract: A backlight and a multiview display employ a light guide having angle-preserving scattering feature and a grating spreader. The angle-preserving scattering feature is configured to scatter a portion of guided light out of the light guide as emitted light. The grating spreader includes a diffraction grating and is configured to convert light provided by a light source into spatio-angularly homogenous light to be guided as the guided light. The multiview display includes an array of light valves as well as the angle-preserving scattering feature that includes a multibeam element having a size that is comparable to a size of a light valve of the light valve array.

  • Publication number: 20220171118
Abstract: A backlight scattering element, multiview display, and method of backlight scattering element operation employ a high-index light guide layer in conjunction with a light guide and diffraction grating to provide emitted light. The backlight scattering element includes a light guide that guides light as guided light and a high-index light guide layer optically connected to the light guide and configured to extend a thickness of the light guide. The backlight scattering element also includes a diffraction grating adjacent to the high-index light guide layer to diffractively scatter out a portion of the guided light as emitted light. The multiview display includes a light guide having a first layer and a second layer, a refractive index of the second layer being greater than a refractive index of the first layer. The multiview display may modulate diffractively scattered out directional light beams to provide a multiview image.

  • Publication number: 20210240005
Abstract: A multiview backlight and multiview display employ an optical mask element having a first portion and a laterally displaced second portion to mitigate Moiré associated with the optical mask element. The multiview backlight includes an array of multibeam unit cells distributed across a light guide. Each multibeam unit cell has a multibeam element configured to scatter out a portion of guided light as a plurality of directional light beams having different directions corresponding to different views of the multiview display. Each multibeam unit cell further includes an optical mask element having the first portion aligned and co-extensive with the multibeam element and the second portion laterally displaced within the multibeam unit cell from the first portion. One or both of the lateral displacement and an overall size of the optical mask element is configured to mitigate Moiré associated with the optical mask element.
