  • Patent number: 6978706
Abstract: A spindle liner for a turning machine has an elongated polymeric member sized to fit within the inner diameter of a spindle and further has a bore through the polymeric member sized and shaped to receive a given size bar stock. The spindle liner may be installed within a spindle and bolted to a spindle flange by an adapter fixed to the spindle liner so that the spindle liner rotates with the spindle. The spindle liner attenuates noise and vibration of the rotating bar stock and eliminates whipping of the free end of the bar stock.

  • Patent number: 5649460
Abstract: A spindle liner and spindle liner assembly are for use in a lathe. A quick-change feature allows the spindle liner to be readily installed and readily replaced with a new spindle liner. The spindle liner has a tubular sleeve with a set of annular bearing rings and an annular mounting flange. An adapter specially configured for mounting on a particular lathe is designed for use with the spindle liner. The adapter has an annular body with a center hole to allow the tubular sleeve of the spindle liner to be slid through it. A recessed shoulder around the hole has a diameter to accommodate the annular mounting flange of the spindle liner. The adapter also has at least one and preferably opposed retainer lugs extending inwardly from a peripheral edge of the annular body and overlying the recessed shoulder. An equal number of notches in the mounting flange of the spindle liner are positioned to align with the retainer lugs when the spindle liner is positioned in the lathe.

  • Patent number: 5535653
Abstract: A bar stock supporting and feeding apparatus which includes first and second series of bar stock support members centered about a longitudinal axis and movable with respect to the axis to rotatably engage a length of bar stock. An adjustable stop mechanism is provided to quickly adjust the apparatus to rotatably support bar stock of different diameter. A loading and unloading mechanism is provided which does not require that an operator's hands be placed dangerously close to the apparatus. A bar stock feeding apparatus is provided with a similar gear system for engaging the bar stock and feeding it into an adjacent machine tool. A fail-safe mechanism prevents disengagement of the support apparatus in the event of a loss of fluid pressure in the system.

  • Patent number: 5505584
Abstract: A loading and unloading mechanism including a workpiece receiving and discharging chamber and pressurized air/vacuum source operatively connected to the chamber. The chamber is tubular and adapted to be connected to the spindle of a lathe in a coaxial relationship. Pressurized air is used to force the workpiece into the lathe spindle and vacuum pressure is used to draw the workpiece out of the lathe and back into the tubular chamber. The device may be modified to facilitate vacuum unloading only in the case in which the lathe is manually loaded. A proximity switch is provided for detecting the passage of a finished workpiece out of the lathe and back into the chamber whereupon the chamber is opened and the workpiece is discharged.

  • Patent number: 5228371
Abstract: A bar feeding and handling machine. A frame bar is mounted in parallelism with the axis of a machine chuck. The chuck is adapted to support a workpiece. Link members are pivotally attached to the frame bar adjacent to opposite ends thereof. A pneumatic cylinder is pivotally attached to the link members to move between an advanced position aligned with the machine chuck and a retracted position. A pusher head mounted on a cylinder rod of the cylinder can engage the workpiece when in advanced position. The cylinder rod and the head are advanced to advance the workpiece. Another workpiece can be loaded into the chuck when the cylinder is in retracted position.

  • Patent number: 4798109
Abstract: A machine for forming a chamfer on an edge portion of a cylindrical workpiece. The machine includes a table, a chuck mounted on the table for holding the workpiece and track means mounted on the table and extending parallel to the axis of the chuck. A carriage runs on the track means. A motor is carried by the carriage. A cutter head is driven by the motor. Cutter blade means mounted on the cutter head forms a chamfer on the workpiece as the carriage and the cutter head are advanced.

  • Patent number: 4621550
Abstract: A machine for supporting bar feed stock in a turning tool. The machine includes a main tube having a cylindrical inner wall and an intermediate guide tube rotatably mounted inside the main tube. The intermediate guide tube has a cylindrical outer wall and an interior elongated opening. The interior of the intermediate guide tube receives the workpiece with an end portion of the workpiece extending into a spindle of the turning tool and with the interior opening fitting closely around the bar feed stock. The intermediate guide tube is connected to the spindle to rotate therewith and with the workpiece. Liquid in the main tube surrounds the intermediate guide tube. The intermediate guide tube tends to become centered in the main tube as the spindle turns.

  • Patent number: 4421446
Abstract: A bar feed mechanism for a machine tool comprising at least one cylindrical tube adapted to be aligned with a spindle of the machine tool, a piston movable in the tube, a shaft rotatably secured to the piston, a centering sleeve rotatably mounted on the shaft and axially movable thereon, center elements secured to the shaft at the end remote from the piston, a bushing at the end of the tube adjacent the machine tool having an orifice which permits passage of the center means therethrough but retains the centering sleeve, an hydraulic pressure inlet for admitting pressure fluid behind the piston to cause movement thereof in a feeding direction, apparatus to admit pressure fluid between the piston and centering sleeve, and pressure relief apparatus to permit discharge of pressure fluid from the tube between the piston and centering sleeve when the sleeve abuts the bushing, thereby permitting continued movement of the piston, shaft and center elements in the feeding direction.
