  • Patent number: 10893968
Abstract: Rate-dependent, elastically-deformable devices according to various embodiments can be stretched and recovered at low elongation rates. Yet they become stiff and resistive to stretching at high elongation rates. These device can be utilized in orthotics, braces, and circulation-enhancing compression garments for the prevention of injury, promotion of personal health, and/or enhancement in human performance. The rate-responsive properties of the devices are critical performance enablers, as they allow the devices to provide a unique balance of comfort and performance that cannot be achieved with conventional, passive straps, braces, and compression garments.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 30, 2018
Date of Patent: January 19, 2021
Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Army
Inventors: Eric D. Wetzel, Joseph K. Hitt, Robert B. Floersheim

  • Patent number: 8716877
Abstract: A method for harvesting energy from ankle motion includes coupling a generator module across an ankle joint, the generator module including a generator and an elastic member. The generator is affixed to the leg shank and at least one of the generator and the elastic member is continuously coupled to the foot across the ankle joint. Energy may be harvested in the elastic member while generating electricity with the generator from motion of the ankle joint. Alternatively, or in addition, electricity may be generated with the generator from energy harvested in the elastic member after the energy is harvested.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 16, 2011
Date of Patent: May 6, 2014
Inventors: Thomas Sugar, Joseph K. Hitt, Alex Boehler, Kevin Hollander, Jeffrey A. Ward
