    Abstract: Fire resistant hydraulic fluid compositions comprising (a) one or more esters of polyhaloaromatic acids per se or in combination with (b) one or more hydraulic fluids independently selected from mineral oil, poly-.alpha.-olefins, alkylated aromatics, cycloaliphatics, esters of dibasic acids, polyol esters, polyglycols, silicones, silicate esters, phosphate esters, and halogenated compositions other than (a); a method for imparting fire resistant properties to known hydraulic fluids by adding one or more esters of polyhaloaromatic acids alone or combined; and the use of the inventive compositions as fire resistant hydraulic fluids. The fire resistant compositions may, optionally, contain one or more shear-stable polymers which have been found to increase the fire resistance of the hydraulic fluid composition.

    Abstract: Flame retardant compositions are provided containing at least one ester of a polyhaloaromatic acid and at least one polyolefin resin. The compositions may also contain one or more brominated and/or chlorinated compounds to provide additional flame retardancy, and other resins or engineering thermoplastics may be blended with the polyolefin. In addition to providing flame retardancy, the polyhaloaromatic acid esters are effective as processing and compatibilizing aids for the resin, and may also function as tackifiers, mold release agents, plastisole, adhesives, plasticizers, polymer additives, and aids in preventing melt fracture.

    Abstract: Flame retardancy of polyphenylene ether, polyolefin and polyethylene terphthalate resins and resin blends is increased by blending with the resin a flame retarding amount of a halogenated polyester which is the reaction product of a halogenated phthalic acid or phthalic anhydride with an epoxide or hydroxy compound containing at least two hydroxyl groups. The polyphenylene ether resin may include homopolymers or copolymers of polyphenylene ethers or blends of polyphenylene ethers with vinyl aromatic resins such as styrene polymers and copolymers. The flame retarding polyesters are also effective as processing aids in improving the flowability and moldability of the resins during melt processing.

    Abstract: Flame retardancy of polyphenylene ether resins is increased by blending with the resin a flame retarding amount of a halophenyl hydrocarbyl ester. The ester is preferably the reaction production of a halogenated phenol, preferably a bromophenol, and a hydrocarbyl acid, acid chloride or acid anhydride. The polyphenylene ether resin may include homopolymers or copolymers of polyphenylene ethers or blends of polyphenylene ethers with vinyl aromatic resins such as styrene polymers and copolymers. The flame retarding halophenyl esters are also effective as processing aids in improving the flowability and moldability of the polyphenylene ether resins during melt processing.
