Publication number: 20090229953Abstract: Conveyors and methods for operating conveyors to accelerate laterally adjacent conveyed articles over different distances. The conveyors provide a conveying surface atop rollers in a conveyor belt. The belt rollers ride on a bearing surface underlying the belt on a carryway. As the belt advances, the rollers riding on the bearing surface rotate in a direction of rotation to accelerate conveyed articles along the belt in the direction of rotation. The bearing surface is shaped so that its length in the direction of belt travel varies across the width of the conveyor.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 14, 2008Publication date: September 17, 2009Inventors: Eric M. Pressler, Joseph M. DePaso

Publication number: 20080121498Abstract: An accumulation-and-release conveyor using a roller belt with rollers arranged to rotate in the direction of belt travel. The rollers extend through the thickness of the belt to support conveyed articles. The belt continuously advances along a conveyor carryway from an upstream end to a downstream end. A movable stop divides the carryway into an upstream article-accumulation zone and a downstream article-acceleration zone. In the accumulation zone, the rollers are freely rotatable; in the acceleration zone, the rollers roll on a bearing surface underlying the belt. The stop is selectively moved between a blocking position preventing articles from passing and accumulating them with low back line pressure on the freely rotatable rollers in the upstream accumulation zone and a release position allowing articles to pass to the accumulation zone where they are propelled forward and separated from each other by the rotation of the rollers rolling on the bearing surface.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 29, 2006Publication date: May 29, 2008Applicant: LAITRAM, L.L.C.Inventors: Mark Costanzo, Joseph M. DePaso, Timothy C. UnKauf

Publication number: 20080053796Abstract: An elevating belt conveyor and a method for conveying articles up steep inclines. The conveyor has a series of support elements extending outward from the article-conveying surface of a conveyor belt advancing upward along a steep incline. The support elements prevent conveyed articles from sliding down the conveyor belt on the incline. A closely positioned hugger belt facing the article-conveying surface of the conveyor belt advances in the same direction to provide a low-friction retention surface to articles leaning away for the conveyor belt on the incline. In another variation, the support elements may be positioned on the hugger belt rather than on the main conveyor belt, with the main conveyor belt restraining articles against falling from the conveyor on an incline. Alternatively, a vertical array of rollers replaces the hugger belt as a low-friction retaining surface.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 23, 2006Publication date: March 6, 2008Applicant: LAITRAM, L.L.C.Inventors: Joseph M. DePaso, David C. Weiser

Publication number: 20070295582Abstract: A separation conveyor using a roller belt whose rollers are already rotating before receiving an article to provide immediate pull-away from an infeed conveyor. The rollers of a roller belt extend through the thickness of the belt and into contact with a bearing surface in a reversing segment of a belt path between the returnway and the carryway of the separation conveyor. The rollers are already rotating on the bearing surface in the reversing segment at the infeed end before they contact articles to avoid delays in pulling articles away from the infeed conveyor and onto the separation conveyor.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 26, 2006Publication date: December 27, 2007Applicant: LAITRAM, L.L.C.Inventor: Joseph M. Patent number: 7300572Abstract: A traveling water screen comprising an endless foraminous belt with flights. The foraminous belt forms a water screen extending from a lower end in a flowing stream to an upper end above the surface of the stream. The stream flows through openings in the foraminous screen. The flights, which may be scoops, are arranged in spaced apart relation on the outer surface of the water screen. The water screen is driven in a direction so that its upstream portion advances upward and its downstream portion downward. The flights form inclined surfaces across the width of the screen from a point of highest elevation to one or more points of lowest elevation at one or both side edges of the screen. As the screen moves, the flights lift fish toward the surface. As a flight breaks the surface, fish slide down the inclined flights toward one or both side edges of the screen to be diverted safely.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 2006Date of Patent: November 27, 2007Assignee: Laitram, L.L.C.Inventors: Joseph M. DePaso, Omair Zubair, Kyle J. Sedlacek

Patent number: 7228954Abstract: A conveyor system and associated method for conveying tires received from a multiplicity of tire presses. The conveyor system shown comprises a main, or trench, conveyor flanked on opposite sides by opposing groups of tire presses. Discharge conveyors deliver tires from the tire presses to the main conveyor at multiple positions along the length of the main conveyor. The tires are delivered from both sides of the main conveyor, which conveys them downstream. An open-loop sequencer activates each discharge conveyor to deliver tires to the main conveyor according to a schedule including the sequence of activating each of the discharge conveyors so as to avoid collisions between tires on the main conveyor.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 2005Date of Patent: June 12, 2007Assignee: Laitram, L.L.C.Inventor: Joseph M. Patent number: 7195115Abstract: A conveyor system in which a modular belt or chain is driven by a drive element rotated at a predetermined variable angular speed to compensate for speed fluctuations due to chordal action. A speed signal generator generates a speed signal generally inverse to the uncompensated linear speed of a belt driven by drive elements rotated at a constant angular speed. The speed signal generator detects an encoded pattern rotating in known relationship to the drive element. The encoded pattern represents a predetermined speed profile that is used to compensate for belt speed fluctuations or to provide custom belt speed performance.Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 2005Date of Patent: March 27, 2007Assignee: Laitram, L.L.C.Inventor: Joseph M. Patent number: 7021452Abstract: Apparatus for diverting a stream of articles from one conveyor to another parallel conveyor moving in an opposite direction in a conveyor bed. A diverter element is attached to a carrier that is driven along a path parallel to the two conveyors by a differential drive mechanism coupled to the drive mechanisms of the two conveyors. The differential drive mechanism responds to the difference in the speeds of the two conveyor drive mechanisms to drive the carrier and position the driver element along the parallel conveyors. The diverter element extends at least partway across the widths of the two conveyors to guide articles on one conveyor to the other. In a preferred version, the carrier is an endless conveyor belt to which the diverter element is attached, and the differential drive mechanism includes a shaft arranged coaxially with drive or idler sprocket shafts of the conveyor belts at each end of the bed.Type: GrantFiled: June 13, 2003Date of Patent: April 4, 2006Assignee: Hartness International, Inc.Inventors: Paul L Horton, David W Bogle, John C Hawkins, Jr., Joseph M DePaso

Patent number: 6719127Abstract: A sprocket drive system for a modular conveyor belt that compensates for drive-shaft twist under load. The drive system includes a plurality of belt drive surfaces spaced apart across the width of the underside of each row of a modular conveyor belt. A drive shaft supports a group of sprockets at spaced-apart locations. Sprocket drive surfaces are spaced apart circumferentially around the peripheries of the sprockets and arranged in rows across the sprocket to engage corresponding belt drive surfaces in the belt rows. The belt is wrapped around the sprockets on the drive shaft. The engagement of the sprocket drive surfaces with the belt drive surfaces drives the belt. Either the sprocket drive surfaces or the belt drive surfaces, or both, in each row are arranged in an out-of-phase relationship with each other when the conveyor belt is at no load. Once the conveyor belt is operating at load and the shaft twists, the drive surfaces assume an in-phase relationship for improved belt driving and tracking.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 2002Date of Patent: April 13, 2004Assignee: The Laitram CorporationInventors: Joseph M.
