  • Patent number: 7938169
Abstract: Additives to foundry sand cores are provided for reducing or eliminating surface defects called veins in metal castings, by reducing the propensity of sand mold and core aggregates to crack during metal casting. The additives generally include an iron oxide component such as magnetite and hematite and a glass component which is preferably free of lithium oxide. The additive may also optionally include an amount of carbon effective to reduce adhesion of sand particles to the casting.

  • Patent number: 7104148
Abstract: A method and apparatus for evaluating the flowability of a core-forming material in which an airborne core-forming material is blown downwardly into a first, downwardly extending, long and confining passageway for a predetermined time, and the airborne core-forming material is allowed to escape the first long, confining passageway by diverting it into a short, transverse passageway, and further diverting it into a second, upwardly extending confining passageway, and the flowability of the core-forming material is evaluated from the quantity of core-forming material that has entered the second, upwardly extending confining passageway.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 30, 2004
Date of Patent: September 12, 2006
Assignee: International Engine Intellectual Property Company, LLC
Inventors: Stephen G. Baker, Joshua M. Werling
  • Patent number: 6972302
Abstract: Thermal expansion of sand cores and the formation of vein defects during metal casting operations can be substantially eliminated, with substantially reduced costs, by using an anti-veining material comprising less than about 4% by weight of a lithia-containing material, and at least about 1% by weight of ferric oxide (Fe2O3), said anti-veining material preferably comprising 2.5% Li2O, 10–25% of TiO2, 15–25% Al2O3, 10–25% of Fe3O4, and 60–70% of SiO2 mixed with about 1% by weight of Fe2O3, preferably red iron oxide.

  • Patent number: 6435259
Abstract: A method of fastening core elements together without the use of foreign agencies, such as adhesives, screws or other such fasteners, uses the same core sand and resin that form the core elements themselves. Core sand elements are retained in an assembly by bodies of cured core sand and resin in holes or cavities that span the interface between the core elements and fasten the core sand elements together. Core sand elements are provided with alignable holes, or cavities, into which a mixture of core sand and a curable resin, preferably the same resin used in forming the core sand elements, is added and the curable resin is cured to provide a body of cured core sand and resin, preferably adhering to the core sand elements, fastening the core sand elements together.
