  • Patent number: 9029985
Abstract: Films having a comb-like structure of nanocolumns of Sm2O3 embedded in a SrTiO3 formed spontaneously on a substrate surface by pulsed laser deposition. In an embodiment, the nanocolumns had a width of about 20 nm with spaces between nanocolumns of about 10 nm. The films exhibited memristive behavior, and were extremely uniform and tunable. Oxygen deficiencies were located at vertical interfaces between the nanocolumns and the matrix. The substrates may be single-layered or multilayered.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 20, 2014
Date of Patent: May 12, 2015
Assignee: Los Alamos National Security, LLC

  • Publication number: 20120177902
Abstract: Multiferroic articles including highly resistive, strongly ferromagnetic strained thin films of BiFe0.5Mn0.5O3 (“BFMO”) on (001) strontium titanate and Nb-doped strontium titanate substrates were prepared. The films were tetragonal with high epitaxial quality and phase purity. The magnetic moment and coercivity values at room temperature were 90 emu/cc (H=3 kOe) and 274 Oe, respectively. The magnetic transition temperature was strongly enhanced up to approximately 600 K, which is approximately 500 K higher than for pure bulk BiMnO3.

  • Publication number: 20120058323
Abstract: A two-dimensional vertical heteroepitaxial strain controlled composite is grown. The strain-controlling phase can be benign in all other respects so that the functional properties of the parent phase are unchanged, improved/enhanced, and/or manipulated. The new composite is advantageous because there is no need for expensive specialized crystals and because there are no thickness limitations.

  • Patent number: 7737087
Abstract: A process and composition of matter are provided and involve flux pinning in thin films of high temperature superconductive oxides such as YBCO by inclusion of particles including barium and a group 4 or group 5 metal, such as zirconium, in the thin film.

  • Patent number: 7547661
Abstract: An superconductive article and method of forming such an article is disclosed, the article including a substrate and a layer of a rare earth barium cuprate film upon the substrate, the rare earth barium cuprate film including two or more rare earth metals capable of yielding a superconductive composition where ion size variance between the two or more rare earth metals is characterized as greater than zero and less than about 10×10?4, and the rare earth barium cuprate film including two or more rare earth metals is further characterized as having an enhanced critical current density in comparison to a standard YBa2Cu3Oy composition under identical testing conditions.
