  • Publication number: 20040211392
Abstract: In an internal combustion engine (10), exhaust gas leaves a combustion chamber (14) via at least one outlet valve (36) which is opened by an actuator after termination of a working stroke. A pressure value is determined, which characterizes the pressure of the gas in the combustion chamber during the working stroke. An actual value of the valve lift of the outlet valve (36) is determined, together with actual operating parameters of the internal combustion engine (10) which affect this opening stroke, and based on the determined actual valve lift of the outlet valve (36) and actual operating parameters of the internal combustion engine (10), an actual gas pressure in the combustion chamber (14) at the time of the opening of the outlet valve is calculated at least approximately.

  • Patent number: 6807956
Abstract: A method for cylinder-charge control is described as implementing an internal recirculation of residual gas in the cylinder, through controlling the closing times of at least one exhaust valve of the respective cylinder and by opening at least one intake valve in the vicinity of top dead center of the piston, along with intermittent discharge of residual gas in front of the at least one intake valve. Within one charge-exchange process in the cylinder, in at least two phases that are offset in time from one another, at least one intake valve is opened. This method optimizes the engine operation in the warm-up phase from the standpoint of consumption, pollutant emission and running smoothness.

  • Patent number: 6802299
Abstract: A control system and a control method for an internal combustion engine have a cylinder including an intake valve and an exhaust valve with a fully variable valve-gear assembly. An engine control unit determines setpoint values with regard to a fresh gas charge, an internal residual gas charge, a torque reduction, an EGR control strategy, and a charging strategy. In addition, a transmission device is provided which transmits setpoint values determined by the engine control unit to a valve control unit in synchronization with the crankshaft angle. The valve control unit controls the fully variable valve-gear assembly of the intake and exhaust valve of the cylinder of the internal combustion engine on the basis of the setpoint values determined by the engine control unit.

  • Patent number: 6779496
Abstract: A pressure reservoir is used to exert pressure on a hydraulic system with which, a gas exchange valve, for instance, of an internal combustion engine can be actuated. The pressure reservoir includes a housing and a piston that is prestressed in operation by a device. To enable making the pressure reservoir as small as possible, it is proposed that the device which prestresses the piston of the pressure reservoir has a characteristic force-travel curve, in one range of motion of the piston, that has a slope which differs from the slope in a different range of motion of the piston.

  • Patent number: 6752116
Abstract: A connection between two shaft ends situated coaxially one behind the other, of a gas exchange valve of an internal combustion engine and a piston rod of a valve actuator is provided, where at least one coupling member at least partially surrounds the shaft ends. The coupling member is radially compressed with respect to the two shaft ends by at least one compressing member to produce static friction locking between each shaft end and the coupling member that transfers the actuating motion of valve actuator to gas exchange valve in a slip-free manner. As a result, the fatigue strength of the connection may be increased and its assembly and disassembly may be simplified.

  • Publication number: 20040035378
Abstract: A gas exchange valve device (10) for an internal combustion engine (12), in particular of a motor vehicle, is provided with a hydraulic apparatus (15). This hydraulic apparatus (15) includes a fluid circuit (38, 42, 46, 54) and at least one pressure reservoir (62, 72) connected to the fluid circuit (38, 42,46, 54) and containing a piston (66, 76) prestressed by a device (68, 84), and also includes a controllable actuating device (16). A gas exchange valve (12) is also provided, whose valve element (26) is acted on by the actuating device (16). In order to achieve a simpler design of the gas exchange valve device (10), the invention proposes that the pressure reservoir (72) be disposed so that in an approximately unpressurized state of the pressure reservoir (72), its piston (76) at least indirectly locks the valve element (26) of the gas exchange valve (12) in an essentially closed position. • Patent number: 6681729
Abstract: A method and a device for controlling a gas fill of a plurality of cylinders in an internal combustion engine having variable valve timing, in which a detection signal of a filling sensor is sampled with a sampling rate. Furthermore, a detection interval is determined for one cylinder. The sampling values for ascertaining a sampling-value sum are added up within this detection interval. In addition, a number of sampling values within the first detection interval are counted for ascertaining a first count value. The air mass filled into the first cylinder is then ascertained by forming a quotient from the sampling-value sum and the count value.
