Patent number: 8638813Abstract: This invention relates to a method for negotiating at least one parameter of a protocol that is operated between a first protocol entity (1) and a second protocol entity (2), comprising receiving (301) a first negotiation message (3) that carries a first value for the at least one parameter, wherein the first value is an invalid value for the at least one parameter, and sending (309) a second negotiation message that carries a second value for the at least one parameter in response to the first negotiation message (3). The invention further relates to a computer program, a computer program product, a system (30) a terminal (10) and a network element (20). The protocol may for instance be a Radio Link Protocol, and the first (3) and second (4) negotiation messages may for instance be eXchange Identification XID command and response, respectively.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 2004Date of Patent: January 28, 2014Assignee: Nokia CorporationInventor: Jukka Ala-Vannesluoma

Patent number: 8498265Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide a method and apparatus for enabling a subscriber station to start a settings provisioning process in a WiMAX system. The method includes receiving a request from a subscriber station, the request requesting information for enabling the subscriber station to begin a settings provisioning process. A bootstrap document is then fetched, and a response is transmitted to the subscriber station. The response includes the bootstrap document and the bootstrap document includes the information for enabling the subscriber station to begin the settings provisioning process.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 2007Date of Patent: July 30, 2013Assignee: Nokia CorporationInventors: Tommi O. Rantanen, Jukka Ala-Vannesluoma, Jani Hirsimäki, Ilkka Oksanen, Mikko Tasa

Patent number: 8190156Abstract: An approach is provided for performing network discovery and selection. Information specifying a list of network access providers that may be associated with a home network service provider is received (e.g., the information may be pre-provisioned, or manually configured). The information includes a field that having at least one of the following values: a first value indicating that the network access providers in the list have a higher priority than unlisted network access providers, a second value indicating that the network access providers in the list have equal priority with the unlisted network access providers, or a third value indicating that only the network access providers on the list are to be selected. A network access provider is selected according to the value of the field. This selection process can also be performed for network service providers.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 2008Date of Patent: May 29, 2012Assignee: Nokia CorporationInventors: Tommi Rantanen, Jukka Ala-Vannesluoma, Mikko Tasa

Patent number: 7787420Abstract: The invention relates to a method and a computer program product for negotiation of a parameter for a protocol that controls data transmission between first Communication Units (CUs) and third CUs via second CUs. An improved protocol parameter adaptation for certain non-transparent data call handovers is achieved by proposing that when an existing association of said first CU with a former second CU is changed to an association of said first CU with a new second CU, protocol entities of the first CU and protocol entities of the third CU associated with the new second CU exchange at least one negotiation message containing a value for said parameter. The invention further relates to a system for data transmission.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 2004Date of Patent: August 31, 2010Assignee: Nokia CorporationInventors: Juha Räsänen, Jukka Ala-Vannesluoma

Patent number: 7609715Abstract: A method in a mobile communication system, comprising a mobile station and a base transceiver station, which are both arranged to use radio link protocol (RLP) and link protocol (L2R) in non-transparent data transmission. At least a first and a second frame of fixed lengths are defined for the radio link protocol for data transmission, the frames being of different lengths. The link protocol is arranged to transmit status information defining data transmission. In non-transparent data transmission between the mobile station and the base transceiver station, remapping during the data transmission between said frames is arranged to be initiated. The initiation of the remapping is arranged to be indicated to the link protocol layer (L2R). Current status information on the link protocol (L2R) is arranged to be transmitted in the radio link protocol (RLP) frame transmitted first after said remapping.Type: GrantFiled: August 21, 2002Date of Patent: October 27, 2009Assignee: Nokia CorporationInventor: Jukka Ala-Vannesluoma

Publication number: 20080235048Abstract: A terminal's home network service provider H-NSP determines that the terminal is connected to an access provider, and sends to the terminal a list of access providers and a list of service providers. The list of access providers indicates the H-NSP's preferences of the listed access providers relative to one another, and the list of service providers indicates the H-NSP's preferences of the listed service providers relative to one another. The terminal receives the list and connects to an access provider and a service provider according to the preferences indicated. Methods, apparatus, and software/hardware/firmware is detailed for implementing these aspects, from the H-NSP, V-NSP and terminal's perspectives. Much additional information is described that may be included in the preference lists according to various embodiments, and the invention is particularly advantageous for use in a WiMAX system.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 21, 2008Publication date: September 25, 2008Inventors: Tommi O. Rantanen, Jukka Ala-Vannesluoma, Jani Hirsimaki, Mikko Tasa
