Patent number: 11931171Abstract: The present disclosure is related to a method and apparatus for determining drug usage or a physiological characteristic of a patient. The present disclosure describes acquiring a video sequence, of an eye of a patient, the video sequence being a plurality of video frames, determining a frequency spectrum from a pupillary data of the video sequence, and determining, based on the frequency spectrum, the physiological characteristic or drug of use of the patient. In an embodiment, at least one frequency can be probed based on which physiological characteristic is being explored.Type: GrantFiled: January 15, 2019Date of Patent: March 19, 2024Assignee: CHILDREN'S NATIONAL MEDICAL CENTERInventor: Julia C. Finkel

Publication number: 20210045680Abstract: The present disclosure is related to a method and apparatus for determining THC usage of a person. In an embodiment, at least one frequency can be probed based on which physiological characteristic is being explored. For example, the physiological characteristic can be ?#-tetrahydrocannabinol, and the at least one frequency probed can be selected to be specific to ?#-tetrahydrocannabinol.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 15, 2019Publication date: February 18, 2021Applicant: CHILDREN'S NATIONAL MEDICAL CENTERInventor: Julia C. Patent number: 10555687Abstract: Described herein is an apparatus and method for generating a pain score for a patient. The method includes the steps of generating a PLR response signature for each drug of a plurality of drugs and further initiating a light stimulus to the patient, and measuring a corresponding PLR response. The method includes initiating a neuro-stimulus to the patient, the neuro-stimulus being initiated over a set of frequencies, each frequency being associated with a unique intensity, and stimulating a unique nerve fiber type of the patient, and measuring a PRD response of the patient for the initiated neuro-stimulus. Further, the method includes determining, for each nerve fiber type, a threshold response based on the measured PRD, determining a weight for each threshold response based on the PLR response, and combining the determined weight for each threshold response to obtain a pain score for the patient.Type: GrantFiled: October 11, 2016Date of Patent: February 11, 2020Assignee: CHILDREN'S NATIONAL MEDICAL CENTERInventor: Julia C Finkel

Patent number: 9326725Abstract: An apparatus and method for performing human algometry are disclosed. They include a stimulator configured to apply electrical stimulation of variable intensity to an area of a patient's body, a monitoring device configured to measure a level of cortical activity in one or more regions of the patient's brain, and a microprocessor connected to the stimulator and the monitoring device that is configured to correlate the intensity of the electrical stimulation with the level of activity in the one or more regions of the patient's brain and to determine at least one of a measurement of pain intensity, a measurement of a sensory detection threshold (SDT), a measurement of a drug's analgesic impact, an indication of an onset of tolerance to a drug, an indication of an onset of analgesic-induced hyperalgesia, an indication of conditions of allodynia, a measurement of dose-response characteristics of pain management drugs, and a characterization of a pain condition.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 2011Date of Patent: May 3, 2016Assignee: Children's National Medical CenterInventors: Julia C.
