  • Patent number: 4450360
Abstract: Arylalkyliodonium salts are provided which can be used as thermal or photoinitiators for polymerization of a wide variety of cationically polymerizable organic materials. Reaction is effected between an aryliodonium tosylate and an active hydrogen aliphatic organic compound, such as dimedone, to produce an intermediate arylalkyliodonium tosylate salt which is thereafter reacted with a polyfluoro metal or metalloid salt of an alkali or alkaline earth metal to produce the desired arylalkyliodonium polyfluoro metal or metalloid salt, such as dimedonylphenyliodonium hexafluoroarsenate.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 12, 1982
Date of Patent: May 22, 1984
    Assignee: General Electric Company
Inventors: James V. Crivello, Julia L. Lee
  • Patent number: 4442197
Abstract: Photocurable compositions are provided which can be cured with ultraviolet light at a wave length greater than 300 nm. The photocurable compositions are based on the use of cationically polymerizable organic materials, for example, an epoxy resin and a photoinitiator in the form of a dialkylphenacyl sulfonium salt or hydroxyaryldialkyl sulfonium salt which have been sensitized with a particular dye sensitizer.

    Assignee: General Electric Company
Inventors: James V. Crivello, Julia L. Lee
  • Patent number: 4399071
Abstract: A method is provided for making certain diaryliodonium salts which are useful as photoinitiators for a variety of cationic polymerizable organic materials. Reaction is effected between an aromatic iodo compound and an arylorganic aromatic compound in the presence of a peroxy organic acid and an organic sulfonic acid.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 12, 1982
Date of Patent: August 16, 1983
    Assignee: General Electric Company
Inventors: James V. Crivello, Julia L. Lee
  • Patent number: 4374066
Abstract: A method for making triarylsulfonium salts is provided based on the reaction of an aromatic hydrocarbon, a sulfur chloride, and chlorine in the presence of a Friedel Crafts catalyst. The triarylsulfonium salts can be used as cationic photoinitiators to effect the deep section cure of a variety of organic resin compositions.
