  • Patent number: 7878167
Abstract: An engine with intake and exhaust valves that may be controlled with a circular cam lobe is provided. The rotating axis of the circular cam lobe is offset from the physical center of the cam lobe. This permits the cam lobe to impart a reciprocal opening and closing of the valve. To maintain the valve in the closed position, the interconnection between the cam lobe and the valve 12 may have a spring which is compressed to allow the valve to remain closed for a set duration of time while the cam lobe continues to rotate.

Abstract: An engine comprising a valve, cam lobe, rocker, follower member and an optional spring is disclosed herein. The valve may comprise a valve stem. The cam lobe may have a base circle and a nose. The cam lobe may be attached to a rotating shaft. The rocker may have a valve end portion contacting the valve, a lifter end portion defining a pivot axis of the rocker and a cam surface disposed between the valve end portion and the lifter end portion. The nose of the cam lobe may contact the cam surface for opening the valve. The follower member may be disposed adjacent the cam lobe opposite the rocker. The follower member may be attached to the rocker and have a curved inner surface upon which the nose of the cam lobe contacts for lifting the rocker. The spring may be disposed about the valve stem of the valve for closing the valve stem of the valve.

  • Publication number: 20080060596
Abstract: A desmodromic valve and cam system is provided. The system may comprise a cam lobe mounted to a cam shaft and defining an effective cam surface. The system may also comprise a rocker mounted to a valve wherein the rocker pivots up and down in response to an input of the cam lobe to close and open the valve. More particularly, the effective cam surface of the cam lobe pushes up on the rocker follower surface to close the valve and pushes down on the rocker follower surface to open the valve.

  • Patent number: 6948468
Abstract: The present invention provides an exemplary rockerless desmodromic valve and adjustable overhead cam system adapted to be installed onto a head for an internal combustion engine which utilizes at least one valve for each intake and exhaust port. The system includes a plurality of valves having a retaining sphere disposed on a distal tip of a stem of each valve; a camshaft; and a split cam lobe assembly assigned to each valve. The split cam lobe assemblies include a left and right cam lobe, a camshaft receiving hole oriented transversely through each cam lobe adapted to slidably receive the camshaft, and a cam following groove halve disposed on the interior side. Furthermore, the interior sides of the left and right cam lobe are adapted to be interfaced together to form a following groove having a generally spherical cross-sectional shape adapted to slidably receive the retaining sphere from a respective one of the valves.

  • Publication number: 20040261749
Abstract: An internal combustion engine is provided wherein the crankcase is sealed from the oil pan to provide an airtight compression chamber wherein the air is compressed by action of the pistons. Air is withdrawn from the atmosphere through one-way valves on the engine block. The compressed air is then passed from the compression chamber into, optionally, a compressed air storage means where it is regulated through a valve for mixture with the air-fuel mixture from the carbureting means, thereby providing a boost in the air-fuel charge entering the combustion chambers. Lubricating modifications are also provided to lubricate the crankshaft and camshaft bearings located within the compression chamber.

  • Patent number: 6044818
Abstract: A vibration absorbing member is disposed within an annular recess on the side of the connecting rod/bearing cap assembly or alternatively/additionally disposed between the crankshaft main bearing and crank shaft main bearing journal. A vibration absorbing member is preferably comprised of two pieces to fit in a recessed portion of the connecting rod and a recessed portion of the bearing cap to facilitate easy installation. The vibration absorbing member absorbs vibrations between the connecting rod/bearing cap assembly and the crank shaft. Similarly, the vibration absorbing member absorbs vibration between the crank shaft and the engine block when disposed between the crankshaft and the crankshaft main bearing. In conventional single or multiple in-line cylinder engines the vibration absorbing member is disposed on both sides of the connecting rod and bearing cap assembly.
