  • Patent number: 5602063
Abstract: The present invention discloses a low density basic refractory lining material with improved resistance to corrosion by molten slag and metal that is especially adapted for use as a disposable liner in molten metal containing vessels. This material incorporates hollow ceramic microspheres of alumina, silica or mixtures thereof, having diameters of between about 5 and 500 microns as a density reducing material. This material may also include a stiffening agent, a set retarding agent, a foaming agent to further reduce the density, a plasticizer, and a low temperature binder. The addition of the ceramic microspheres has been found to provide reduced open porosity, improving resistance to corrosion. Also, the invention relates to methods for applying the disposable lining and vessels which include the lining applied thereon.

  • Patent number: 5512316
Abstract: The disclosed invention provides a method of forming refractory linings for maintaining refractory linings against attack by corrosive materials such as those present in steel manufacture. The method entails spraying an aqueous mixture of a refractory composition that includes at least one refractory material onto the working surface of a refractory lining. Spraying is performed to provide one or more layers of the refractory composition on the refractory lining after each exposure of the lining to corrosive materials such as those incurred in steel manufacture.

  • Patent number: 5507474
Abstract: The invention is directed to a low density material suitable for use as an expendable liner in a molten metal handling vessel such as tundish. The low density materials include a first component having at least one decomposable compound capable of producing gas, a second component having a reactable compound for reacting with the decomposable compound in the presence of water to cause the decomposable compound to generate a gas, and a refractory aggregate. The invention also relates to a method for making the low density material and to the resultant material as well.

  • Patent number: 5366944
Abstract: A dry vibratable substantially alkali free refractory composition is disclosed for use as a disposable liner wherein the combination of a powdered metal utilized as a high temperature binder and an organic material utilized as a low temperature binder obviates the use of alkali oxides which previously caused degradation of the permanent refractory liner materials upon which the disposable lining was placed. Low density materials such as expanded inorganic materials can be added to the disclosed compositions to decrease the density. The invention also relates to a method of providing a disposable lining in a vessel having a permanent refractory lining, and to the resulting vessel thereof.

  • Patent number: 5302563
Abstract: The present invention discloses an alkali oxide free low density refractory material especially adapted for use as a disposable liner material for molten metal containing vessels. This material includes about 0.1 to about 2 weight percent of a stiffening agent, about 0.1 to about 2 weight percent of a set retarding agent, about 0.1 to 6 weight percent of density reducing materials, about 0.1 to about 5 weight percent of a plasticizer, up to about 2 weight percent of a secondary binder, and the balance of a refractory aggregate which is preferably MgO. The stiffening agent and set retarding agent are used in substantially the same amounts to provide the disclosed refractory material with increased resistance to slumping while, at the same time, allowing spraying apparatus residence times of up to 30-40 minutes without clogging. The composition includes less than about 0.

  • Patent number: 5284808
Abstract: A refractory composition, particularly for application as a dry vibratable refractory for forming the wearable, disposable monolithic lining coating the permanent lining of a tundish or ladle used in molten metal casting processes is disclosed. The composition contains a refractory aggregate, a first bonding agent actuatable at temperatures in the range of from about 300.degree. F. to about 1000.degree. F. to cause the formation of interparticle bonds between aggregate particles, at least one second bonding agent actuatable at temperatures in the range of from about 1000.degree. F. to about 2500.degree. F. to cause further formation of interparticle bonds between aggregate particles, and, optionally, clay. The use of both first and second bonding agents enables installation of the refractory in hot practice, in which vessel preheat temperatures of up to about 2500.degree. F. are utilized.
