  • Publication number: 20040155546
Abstract: A permanent magnet alternator including a stationary stator including a plurality of spaced stator poles projecting inwardly from the stator, a winding circuit wound through the spaces between the stator poles, a rotor assembly mounted for rotation within the stator, including a plurality of permanent magnets fixedly mounted on an outer circumferential surface of the rotor in alternating polarity, and a retaining shield for reducing the effects of centrifugal motion of the rotor during operation of the alternator.
    Type: Application
    Filed: February 9, 2004
    Publication date: August 12, 2004
Inventors: Julius J. Stevens, William C. Edmundson, Ronald E. Murray, Craig G. Young

  • Patent number: 4574213
Abstract: A bearing support structure in a starter motor housing includes a housing having a bore which receives a bearing and seal member disposed axially inwardly from the bearing. The bearing is exposed from the end of the starter motor to permit introduction of fluid lubricant to the bearing from a remote source while the seal prevents lubricant, particulate matter and environmental debris from entering the interior of the starter motor housing, thereby preventing harmful deposits on the electrical components within the starter motor. In the preferred embodiment, the housing comprises an end plate for a tubular starter motor housing.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 4506163
Abstract: A starter motor housing comprising a tubular housing formed by an annular wall having a thickened wall portion adjacent the stator winding of the starter motor. The stator cores abut against and are secured to the inner periphery of the thickened wall portion to increase the flux path and, thus, the effective flux energy produced by the stator windings. However, the thickened wall portion is disposed intermediate radially reduced wall end portions to reduce the weight and size of the motor housing. Preferably, the tubular housing is an iron casting.
