Abstract: A recordable and/or rewriteable recording medium for storing still picture data, and recording and/or reproducing method and apparatus therefor. The recording medium stores still picture group information for grouping a plurality of still pictures in order to manage the still picture at a group level, and stores audio group information for grouping additional audio data added to the still picture data after the still picture data are recorded. Therefore, large-capacity still picture data and additional audio data added thereto can be recorded using a minimum amount of management information. Further, during reproduction, data can be displayed and edited in units of the respective still pictures. Also, it is possible to cope with after-recording of the audio data.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for recording and reproducing audio and video data in real time on a rewritable optical disk, and a disk recording medium allowing a user to access recorded data at predetermined intervals. The disk recording medium includes cells having part of predetermined data and set as reproduction and recording units, and information on a position from the start of the cells to a specific position. The method includes forming a cell of part of the recorded audio and video data, forming a program of the one or more cells, forming a part of title (PTT) of a specific portion of the recorded audio and video data, and then forming the information on the cell, the program, and the PTT on the disk.

Abstract: A recording medium and a recording apparatus store manufacturer information to support specific functions for each manufacturer and a method therefore. A reproducing apparatus reproduces the manufacturer information to support specific functions. When the recording apparatus modifies the contents of the recording medium, the manufacturer's identification code is recorded. The recording apparatus and the reproducing apparatus checks the identification code on the recording medium before using its own manufacture information item for some specific function. Also, a time required to determine whether the manufacturer information items are effective is reduced.

Abstract: A method of generating information used for fast searching of packet data, a recording medium for storing the information, and a recording and/or playback apparatus using the same. Packet data is segmented into basic units of a predetermined size and basic unit information is generated for each basic unit. The basic unit information includes information indicating the arrival time of the first packet of each corresponding basic unit. This information is recorded with a data stream and used when quickly searching for a desired position during special playback such as a time search. If a fast search method such as binary searching is adopted, significantly faster searching can be realized.

Abstract: Recording medium storing an additional information for defect management and a method for managing defects are disclosed. The method includes the steps of processing a defective data block during checking for defects of the recording medium where A/V data is recorded in a reference block unit of a predetermined size, using a predetermined defect management method, and moving the reference block including the defective data block to an unused area from a user area, and recording additional information for managing defects of the reference block moved to the unused area on a predetermined information area of the recording medium. Thus, defects are independently managed during recording and reproduction of video and audio data on a rewritable recording medium, to thereby ensure real-time reproduction without changing the method for managing defects which are physical regulations of the recording medium.

Abstract: An apparatus for constructing frames for low-speed reproduction of a moving picture recorded in an interlaced scanning mode. A user interface receives a user setting speed for the low-speed reproduction. A field selector generates a field select mode signal for constructing second moving picture frames (for slow-speed playback) from first moving picture frames (for normal-speed playback) in response to the input user setting speed. A frame construction unit, in response to the field select mode signal, repeatedly selects moving picture data of a first field and a second field contained in each of the first moving picture frames, to construct the second moving picture frames corresponding to the first moving picture frames, wherein the number of times each frame is selected is determined by the user setting speed.

Abstract: A picture decoder which prevents picture jitter when operating in a fast play mode. The picture decoder has a picture jitter preventing apparatus, which includes a picture coding extension region detector for detecting a picture coding extension region from picture data coded according to the MPEG2 standard, information region detector for detecting a region having top.sub.-- field.sub.-- first and repeat.sub.-- first.sub.-- field information from the detected picture coding extension region signal, and an information converter for converting values of top.sub.-- field.sub.-- first and repeat.sub.-- first.sub.-- field into 1 and 0, respectively, when in the fast play mode, and outputting the picture data free of jitter.

Abstract: A motion image coder is provided with a pre-filter for performing a pre-filtering which adaptively restricts the band for characteristics of the coded blocks. The pre-filtered result is used in determining quantization step size, thereby halving the quantization error causing a picture quality deterioration into a resolution error. Therefore, picture quality can be improved.
