  • Patent number: 6228160
Abstract: The invention provides new stains which fire to a red-brown color for coloring ceramic compositions. The stains comprise Fe2O3 and/or an Fe compound which forms Fe2O3 on firing, in uniform distribution in a pulverulent matrix based on an oxide-like and/or silicate-like material which is amorphous to X-rays to the extent of at least 50% and has a specific surface area (BET) of at least 40 m2/g, and are obtainable by bringing the constituents into intensive contact together. The matrix preferably comprises 80 to 100% amorphous SiO2 or SiO2-rich silicate with a BET surface area of 90 to 300 m2/g and 0 to 20% of an auxiliary substance, such as silicone oil. The stains can be prepared by intensive dry grinding.
