  • Patent number: 9234140
Abstract: A rotary machine type shock wave reactor suitable for thermal cracking of hydrocarbon-containing materials includes a casing, a rotor whose periphery contains an axial-flow blade cascade, and a directing rim, provided with at least two stationary vane cascades, adjoining an axial-flow rotor cascade, wherein the casing substantially encloses the periphery of the rotor and the directing rim. The cascades are configured to direct feedstock containing process stream to repeatedly pass the cascades in a helical trajectory while propagating within the duct between the inlet and exit and to generate stationary shock-waves to heat the feedstock. The axial-flow rotor cascade is configured to provide kinetic energy and add velocity to feedstock containing process stream, and the stationary vanes located downstream the rotor cascade are configured to reduce the velocity of the stream and convert kinetic energy into heat. The reactor may also process carbohydrate-and glyceride-based feedstock, and gaseous biomass matter.

  • Patent number: 7282616
Abstract: A process for converting an olefin feed to hydrocarbons suitable for fuel components or their feedstock. According to the process, an olefin feed, possibly together with another hydrocarbon feed, is contacted in a reactor with a catalyst in order to produce a hydrocarbon having at least one alkyl side chain. In the invention, the olefin feed is contacted with a particle-form fluidized catalyst in a circulating-bed reactor, wherein the catalyst forms the circulating bed of the reactor. When the operation is carried out in a circulating-bed reactor, the retention time of the feedstock is short. In this case, iso-olefins are formed quite selectively from n-olefins in isomerization. Since the useful life of the catalyst lengthens while the catalytic activity of the bed remains high for a long time, the conversion level also remains high. A long useful life of the catalyst is an economically highly significant advantage.

  • Patent number: 7070645
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and apparatus for separating two phases from each other. According to the invention, a stream made up of at least two phases is directed to a separation apparatus, which comprises a separation container (25) and cyclones (26) arranged in the flow direction in parallel and in succession, the cyclones having each an elongate separation chamber wherein the phases are separated from each other. According to the invention, the cyclones used are multi-inlet cyclones (26), the total number of which is at least 10. The stream to be treated is directed to each multi-inlet cyclone (26) in a substantially radial direction. Through the placement of a large number of multi-inlet cyclones in parallel, a purification element resembling a filter is obtained.

  • Patent number: 6858130
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for separating particulate matter from a gaseous stream. According to the method, the gaseous stream containing the suspended particulates is passed into a separator apparatus which includes at least two multiple-inlet-multicyclones (16-16C), wherein the particulates are separated from the gas by centrifugal force. According to the invention, a separator apparatus is employed wherein at least two (16-16C) of the multiple-inlet cyclones are adapted to operate in parallel so as to form a multiple-inlet-multicyclone apparatus. The cyclone assembly according to the invention may be used as, e.g., the primary separator of an FCC unit, but more advantageously it serves as the secondary or tertiary separator of an FCC unit to remove “fines” from the flue gases of the preceding separation stages.

  • Patent number: 6814940
Abstract: The present invention concerns a process and an apparatus for thermal conversion of biomass and organic wastes. According to the invention, the feedstock is fed into a fluidized-bed reactor, wherein the feed is converted at an elevated temperature under the influence of particulate matter kept in a fluidized state by a fluidizing gas, the particulate matter is transferred from the reactor to a regenerator for regeneration and then recirculated to the reactor after the regeneration, and the converted hydrocarbon products are recovered from the reactor. Both the reactor and the regenerator comprise risers having an axially annular cross section and being equipped with multi-inlet cyclones for the separation of particulate matter. By means of the invention, it is possible to producer pyrolysis oil, the quality of which is higher than that of oil produced with the processes of the prior art.

  • Publication number: 20040108251
Abstract: A method for processing carbonaceous material in a reactor. Carbonaceous material, such as sawdust, plant residues from forestry or agricultural processes, municipal solid waste and refuse derived fuel, is fed into the riser section (10) of a reactor (10-15) in which it is contacted with inorganic particulate material and reactor walls at an elevated temperature essentially in the absence of oxygen in order to convert the carbonaceous material at least mainly into gaseous processed products, whereby a gas phase is obtained, containing fluidization gas and processed products. According to the invention a dense suspension is formed into the riser space (10) of the reactor, containing based on the particle number 7×108 to 3×1011 particles/m3 (about 2×107-1×1010 particles/ft3), and the mass ratio between the particulate matter bringing heat into the reactor and the carbonaceous material is in the range of 1:1 to 10:1.
