  • Patent number: 7646706
Abstract: A restoration path planner that minimizes the worst-case number of cross-connections that must be performed in a network in the event of a single element failure involves a two-phase optimization. The first phase involves finding two node-disjoint paths for each service demand within a network such that the maximum link bandwidth in the network is minimized and the link bandwidths within the network are leveled. The second phase involves identifying the primary and restoration paths for each service demand within the network such that the worst-case number of cross-connections at any node within the network is minimized across all possible single-event failures. Embodiments also consider service demand-bundling that groups service demands with the same source-destination node pairs and routes them along identical primary and restoration paths, and banding, which consolidates multiple low-rate demands into a high-rate demand and consequently decreases cross-connections required in the event of a failure.

  • Patent number: 7433460
Abstract: A method of controlling link transmission parameters of a communication flow in a network caches one or more network parameters at the end of a first communication flow for an elapsed time, and adjusts the network parameters for controlling link quality and transmit power of a next communication flow based on an uncertainty that is caused by caching for the elapsed time. The state of a communication channel during a previous communication flow (connection) is used to determine network parameters to use at a future communication flow. When a connection begins, and the network does not know the ideal settings to use, the network defines a specified, elapsed time duration over which the state of a previous connection no longer can be trusted, i.e., an uncertainty period. Network parameters are adjusted to account for uncertainty caused by the elapsed time.

  • Patent number: 7149245
Abstract: In the method of determining an airlink modulation and coding scheme, at least one link quality indicator is compensated, and a modulation and coding scheme is read from a table using the compensated link quality indicator. In one embodiment, the at least one link quality indicator includes bit error probability (BEP).

  • Patent number: 6952591
Abstract: In a system having a base station transmitter for transmitting data blocks to one or more mobile stations over a radio link, there is a method for determining an uplink transmit power level at which to transmit a current data block over a radio link from the mobile to the base transmitter station. The method evaluates airlink quality measurements in the radio link over a measurement interval, wherein each time a message is sent to the mobile station, it is evaluated whether a specified number of uplink blocks have transmitted by the mobile station since the start of the measurement interval. Based on the evaluated airlink quality measurement, the method determines the uplink transmit power level that the mobile should be using for the current block, and adjusts the transmit power level, if necessary, for the current block.

  • Patent number: 6856812
Abstract: In a system having a base station transmitter for transmitting data blocks to one or more mobile stations over a radio link, a method for determining a transmit power level at which to transmit a current block. A quality measurement is received from a mobile station indicating an average radio link quality over a previous group of blocks, wherein not all of the blocks of the previous group of blocks were necessarily transmitted at the same transmit power level. A transmit power attenuation level is determined for the current block based on the quality measurement. The transmit power attenuation level is subtracted from the initial transmit power level to determine the transmit power level for the current block.
