  • Patent number: 5089570
Abstract: Dispersion polymers of ethylenically unsaturated monomers which are prepared in the presence of protective colloids and if appropriate emulsifiers by polymerization in an aqueous medium and are present in aqueous dispersion form or in finely dispersed dry powder form. They contain, as protective colloids, water-soluble graft polymers containing vinyl alcohol units on a polyurethane grafting base, the polyurethane grafting bases containing at least 2 urethane groups in the molecule prepared by reacting diisocyanates and diols, and polymer radicals of units of carboxylic acid vinyl esters having 3 to 20 carbon atoms and/or hydrolysis products thereof and if appropriate units of other ethylenically unsaturated monomers and/or hydrolysis products thereof being grafted onto the polyurethane grafting bases.

  • Patent number: 4668749
Abstract: Fluorine-containing copolymers are prepared by free radical-initiated copolymerization of ethylenically unsaturated, copolymerizable monomers, containing vinyl esters, 0.05 to 60% by weight, relative to the total amount of monomers employed, of fluorine-containing monomers in which the copolymerizable ethylene group is substituted by radicals containing fluorocarbon groups, the fluorocarbon groups being composed of at least 2 adjacent carbon atoms having F--C bonds, if appropriate, ethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic and/or dicarboxylic acids, and if appropriate, further monomers, and, if appropriate, the subsequent partial or complete saponification of the vinyl ester units present in the resulting copolymers to give vinyl alcohol units.

  • Patent number: 4418207
Abstract: Unsaturated acetoacetic acid esters are suitable as comonomers in the polymerization of unsaturated compounds in an aqueous medium. Particularly suitable are acetylacetoxyalkyl-allyl ethers which may be synthesized in an easy manner and correspond to the formulae ##STR1## Said allyl ether derivatives are especially prepared by reacting an allyl alcohol with an epoxide and reacting the resulting hydroxyalkyl-allyl ether with diketene. Both reaction steps are carried out at a temperature of from 0.degree. to 100.degree. C., preferably in the presence of a catalyst. The allyl ether derivatives may be copolymerized especially with vinyl compounds, such as vinyl esters, acrylic acid esters, olefins, vinyl halides and vinyl aromatic hydrocarbons.

  • Patent number: 4296226
Abstract: Vinyl polymers with acetylacetoxy groups form the basis of polymer dispersions which are used as binding agent dispersions in paints, particularly suitable vinyl polymers are obtained by polymerizing an acetylacetoxy compound together with a least one further olefinically unsaturated compound, while using as acetylacetoxy compound an allyl ether derivative of the formula ##STR1## The copolymerization is carried out in particular in emulsion at a temperature in the range of from -30.degree. to 200.degree. C. As comonomers there are used especially vinyl esters and (meth-)acrylic acid esters. The polymerization is commonly effected in the presence of a radical-forming initiator and optionally in the presence of emulsifiers and protective colloids.

  • Patent number: 4193902
Abstract: A process is described by which plastics dispersions of high water and saponification resistance are obtained which, due to their small average particle size diameter of 0.01 to 0.06 microns are especially useful as primers for porous substrates. In their penetration characteristics, the present dispersions can be compared with conventional solvent-based primers at comparable solids content. The dispersions are obtained in a one-step polymerization process.
